MUNISING.
This village contains about 1,000 inhabit- ants, and is most beautifully situated on Grand Island bay, an indentation of lake Superior, in Schoolcraft county. It is 40 miles east of Marquette, and 130 miles west of Sault Ste Marie. It boasts of the best harbor on lake Superior and the most famous trout fishing grounds, while wild game of every description abounds. Lying, as it does, in the immediate vicinity of the Pictured Rocks, it is already patronized to a consider- able extent as a summer resort for the tour- ist and invalid, and with its pure air and great natural attractions, bids fair to become the " Saratoga " of lake Superior. Located here is-the extensive charcoal blast furnace of the Munising Iron Co., producing and shipping nearly 10,000 tons of pig iron each year. The Munising river here has a fall of 100 feet, affording an excellent opportunity for water power. The country around is rolling and covered with hardwood timber. Pig iron and brick are shipped. Telegraph, Western Union. Mail semi-weekly. W. H. Dack, postmaster.

MUSKEGON.
Muskegon, the county seat of Muskegon county, a flourishing city of 10,000 inhabi- tants, is situated on the south side, and near the head of Muskegon lake, a beautiful sheet of water which is the outlet of the river of the same name, and also forms the most im- portant harbor on the east shore of lake Michigan, which is about four miles distant from the city. It is toS miles by water, and 192 by rail, from Chicago, and 196 from Detroit. In 1812 the first settlement was made here by John Baptiste Recollet, who established a trading post. The first town- ship meeting was held in 1838, when Henry Penoyer was elected supervisor. The great wealth of the lumber region north and east, which has since been so wonderfully devel- oped, was then just beginning to be realize !, and a few mills had been established in the
interior, along the banks of the Muskegon river, before Muskegon itself attained any importance as a lumber manufacturing place. In 1837 Benj. H. Wheelock built the first saw mill at this place. During the next few years several others were built. The growth of the village was now rapid, and among those who took up land at this time were Martin Ryerson, Wm. Lasley, Horace and Erastus Wilcox, Geo. Woodbury, and Samuel Rose. The village was platted in 1849, in- corporated in 1861, and as a city in IS70.
Muskegon is on the C. & M. L. S. R. R., andøis the terminus of the M. & B. R. R. R .; also of the M. L. S. R. R., while the D. &: M: has a running arrangement so that trains are run between this city and Detroit. It has a daily line of steamboats to Chicago and Milwaukee, and is a stopping place for the east shore line of steamers. The ship- ment of lumber from this place, annually, amounts to about 400,000,000 feet, requiring about 100 vessels, while a large amount is shipped. by. rail. The saw mills, of which there are a large number on Muskegon lake, are mostly of a large size and good construc- tion, containing all the modern labor-saving inventions.
There are also 2 flouring mills, 3 large steam engine works and foundries, 2 saw factories, 2 boiler factories, 4 planing mills, with two of which are connected sash, door and blind factories, I clothespin factory, and the machine shops of the C. & M. L. S. R. R.
The lake on which the city is situated is 41% miles long, and from 1 to 1% miles wide, and affords a perfectly safe har- bor for the large fleet of vessels trading here, and also furnishes plenty of room for booming purposes. Owing to the strong current in the channel leading from the lake to lake Muskegon, the water never freezes over, and affords better advantages for a winter harbor than almost any port on lake Michigan. The largest vesselson the great lakes can enter the port, and fre- quently load with deals directly for Europe.
The surrounding land is well adapted to gardening and fruit raising. more particu- larly grapes and peaches, while large ship- ments of strawberries are made every sea- son.
Muskegon has as fine a Union school build- ing as any in the State, for beauty, conve- nience and architectural design. It also has five wand school houses, affording seating capacity for 2500 children.
There are It churches, S hotels, of which the Hofstra House and Occidental are the best. There are also 2 National banks, the Muskegon National, with a capital of $200,000, and the Lumberman's, with

capital of $100,000. The former has erected a large and elegant building, at a cost of $50,000, which also contains the postoffice.
The city has 2 lodges of Odd.Fellows, 2 Masonic lodges, I Royal Arch Chapter, I Commandery of Knights Templar, I Odd- Fellows' Encampment, and a lodge of Knights of Pythias.
The city is supplied with gas and water works (the Holly system). The newspapers published here are the Chronicle, the Lake. side Register, the Muskegon Herald (Ger- man) and the News & Reporter.
In August, 1874, about half the business portion of the city was consumed by fire, which devastated over 37 acres before its ravages could be stopped. This burnt dis- trict has since been generally built up with substantial brick buildings.
