PONTIAC.

Is the county seat of Oakland, a county that stands seventh in point of agricultural wealth in the United States, and is situated on the Detroit and Milwaukee Railroad, 26 miles northwest of Detroit. It is a city of about 4,000 inhabitants, and is one of the best business places in the State. The town was settled in IS18, by the Pontiac Land Company, who purchased from the govern- ment at $2 per acre, and 1.2So acres of which is now the most valuable portion of Pontiac. In 1819 a road was established between Pontiac and Detroit, and in IS20 this city was made the county seat.

The first newspaper published in the State, outside of Detroit, was called the Oak- land Chronicle, which was afterwards merg- ed in the Detroit Free Press. At present Pontiac has three weekly newspapers, the Bill Poster, Gazette and Commercial.

Pontiac is one of the best wool markets in the State, and also handles an immense quantity of farm productions. It has 5 flour- ing mills, 2 foundries, I brewery, 2 planing mills, I plaster mill, I tannery, etc., and 2 National Banks, a first class steam fire depart- ment, one of the finest school buildings in Michigan, erected at a cost of $70,000. Presbyterian. Congregational, Baptist, Epis- copal, Catholic and Methodist churches, 2 public halls, and a number of very fine resi- dences. The surrounding country is famous for its beautiful lakes, and Orchard lake is quite a summer resort, supporting 2 large hotels and appurtenances.

In the western part of the city stands the magnificent building, known as the Eastern Asylum for the insane, of which an illustra- tion will be found on another page, and which will be completed and ready for occupancy about the first of January, IS78. at a cost of about half a million dollars. It is being constructed so as to accommodate 330 persons, easily 350, and without crowd- ing 400. Telegraph, Western Union. Ex- press, American. Charles. F. Kimball, post- master.
