Is a station on the C. & M. L. S. R. R., 4 miles above New Buffalo. (See Union Pier.)


TRAVERSE CITY.


Is situated at the head of the west arm of Grand Traverse bay and at the mouth of the Boardman river, in the northwest part of Grand Traverse county, of which it is the seat of justice. The place was first settled in 1851, and it now contains about 1500 inhabitants. It is reached by both rail and water, and is distant from Detroit 269 miles, from Grand Rapids 140 miles and east from Frankfort on the shore of lake Michigan 3S miles. There are lines of stages diverging to Sherman, Ell: Rapids, Northport. Old Mission, Glen Arbor, Maple City, Williams- burg, Frankfort and intermediate points. The manufacturing interests are 2 large saw mills, capacity 20,000,000 feet per annum, an extensive flouring mill, a foundry and machine shop, a planing mill and a spice factory. The churches are 4, Baptist, Congregational, Episcopal and Methodist. Two enterprising weekly newspapers are published, the Traverse Bay Eagle and the Grand Traverse Herald. There are five hotels, the Campbell House being the most popular. The U S land office for the Traverse City district is located here. The surrounding country which is rich and productive is fast becoming settledl, and for fruit growing proves to be among the best in the United States, the apples and peaches from this district having taken the first premium at the late centennial exhibition.

A station on the G. R. N. & L. S. R. R., 23 miles north of Grand Rapids. The vil- lage is known as Montgomery, and the post- office as Moon. (See Moon).

A hamlet of 100 inhabitants, in Casnovia township, Muskegon county. 6 miles south- east of Casnovia, its nearest railroad station, and 22 east of Muskegon. It is on Crockery creek, which supplies water power. The country is mostly farming lands, with some pine. The products are grain and potatoes, and the manufactures are flour, lumber and shingles. The village of Trenton is situated on the Detroit river in the township of Monguagon, Wayne county, 15 miles below the city of Detroit. It is a point on the Detroit di- vision of the L. S. & M. S. and the C. & C. S. railways. TROSTVILLE,


Also called Frankentrost, is a German settlement of 350 inhabitants, in Blumfield township, Saginaw county, 10 miles east of Saginaw and 6 from Reese station. It was settled in 1847, and is surrounded by a good farming country, of which wheat, corn, cats, hay and potatoes are the staple crops. UNION CITY.


Is situated at the junction of the St. Joseph and Coldwater rivers, in the township of Union, Branch county. It is a station on the Air line division of the M. C. R. R., 41 miles west of Jackson, and 117 west of Detroit. Union City is a thriving place of about 1,600 inhabitants, and for a village of its size, has a fair show of manufacturing enterprises. Among its industries are a foundry, machine shop and plow factory, employing 50 hands and turning out 100 plows a week, also I wool carding mill, I wooden bowl factory, 3 sash and door factories, 3 carriage shops, 2 flouring mills, I saw mill, I refrigerator manufactory, I stave factory, etc. The religious wants of the people are carefully looked after by the Congregationalists, Methodists and Episcopalians, each of whom have good edifices, the first being a very fine brick. A good weekly newspaper, the Register, is published by Maj. D. J. Easton. There are 3 hotels, I national bank, and a fine brick school building has recently been contracted for, cost to be about $20,000.
