The manufacturing interests consist of g saw mills, I stave factory, I flouring mill, I excelsior factory, I planing mill, and 2 man- ufactories of fruit packages, the demand for the latter being very extensive. The public buildings consist of 8 churches, 2 Baptist, I Congregational, I Catholic, I Lutheran and 3 Methodist, one of which is colored, a fine public school building, and 2 good hotels. There are a- number of handsome brick business blocks and private residences.


St. Joseph has a National bank, capital $50,000, 2 newspapers, the Herald and Traveler, and the Republican. The village was first settled in 1829, though the site had been occupied by French missionaries more than a century before. It was incorporated in 1834. A small side wheel steamer plies regularly between St. Joseph and Chicago, making daily trips. Numerous sail vessels

ST. LOUIS.


Is a flourishing incorporated village, hav- ing a population of about 2,000, situated in Bethany and Pine River townships, in the northern part of Gratiot county, S miles north of Ithaca, the county seat, 33 from Saginaw and 132 from Detroit. Pine river flows through the village, furnishing a mode- rate water power.


St Louis is the western terminus of the Saginaw Valley and St Louis R. R., and is the present eastern terminus of the Chicago, Saginaw & Canada R. R., which is com. pleted and in operation between this point and Cedar Lake, 20 miles west The road is graded and will soon be ironed to Lake View, some 20 miles further. It will probably be completed to Howard City and connect with the G. R. & I. R. R., during the coming season, and will ultimately be pushed through to the Lake Shore at Grand Haven.


The manufactures of the place are a flour mill, a saw mill, a foundry and machine shop, a sash and door factory, a furniture factory and a shook and cooperage stock manufactory, all of which, exceping the last named, are run by water power. There are 4 churches. Baptist, Episcopal, Methodist and Presbyterian. A good Union school, 3 hotels, 2 banks, a weekly newspaper the " Herald " and a mineral spring. Lumber, square timber, staves, heading, hoops and Hour are the principal articles snipped. The place was first settled about 1550, and became incorporated in 1869. Telegraph, Western Union. A small village in the township of Salem, Washtenaw county, 12 miles northeast of Ann Arbor, the county seat. It is on the D. L. & N. R. R., 29 miles west of Detroit and 6 west of Plymouth.

SALINE.


Saline was first settled in 1824, being one of the oldest places in the interior. In 1864 it received a village charter, and now boasts 1,000 inhabitants. It is in Saline township, Washtenaw county, and on the Detroit, Hillsdale &: Southwestern R. R., 11 miles southwest of Ypsilanti, 40 southwest of De- troit and 9 south of Ann Arbor. The Saline river, a tributary of the Raisin, furnishes water power. The manufactories comprise a foundry, 3 flouring mills and some minor industries. It contains 4 churches, Method- ist, Baptist, Lutheran and Presbyterian, a large Union school building, a weekly news- paper, the Review, several good stores, and 2 or more hotels. SALT RIVER.


A postoffice and village of 200 inhabi- tants, in Coe township, Isabella county, 10 miles southeast of Mount Pleasant, the county seat, and 12 northwest of St. Louis, the nearest railway station, with both of which places it has stage communication daily. The village, which takes its name from the stream upon which it is located, was settled in 1865. It contains 2 saw mills, one grist mill, I planing mill, and a Baptist church. SALZBURG.


A lumber and salt manufacturing village, on the left bank of the Saginaw river oppo- site Portsmouth. It is in the township of Bangor, Bay county. The Saginaw division of the M. C. R. R. runs through the village. Salzburg is a mile southwest of Bay City, and 14 miles north of Saginaw City. It contains between 500 and 600 inhabitants, 5 or 6 large saw mills, a flouring mill, 3 salt manufacturing establishments, 2 breweries, etc. The place was settled in 1854. SAND BEACH.


A village of 500 population on the shore of lake Huron, in Sand Beach township, Huron county, 17 miles east of Bad Axe, 60 north of Port Huron, and 120 from De- troit. It is the location of the new harbor of refuge, in process of construction by the United States government. A planing mill, a large flouring mill, a saw mill, and a salt block with a capacity of 160 barrels, erected during the past summer, comprise the manu- factories, The place has a Baptist church, and 2 hotels. Stages to and from Bay City and Port Huron daily, and to Bad Axe tri- weekly. Shipments, salt, wheat, wood, flour, shingles and lumber. Telegraph, Western Union.
