Taking Friend to Hospital, James D. Knox Instantly Killed By Skidding Macnine; Companion Injured

DRIVING his motor car on an errand of mercy late Friday. James D. ! Knox. formerly night foreman at the Frisco railway's north - roundhouse here. was killed when the car skidded on an icy pavement and · plunged orer a high bluff.


Mr. Knox, who three years ago moved from Springfield" to Kansas City to become shop superintendent for the Frisco there, was a brother of George F. Knox, owner of the Knox Shoe company bere.


Late Friday he was at the Frisco roundhouse lo Kansas City when an employe became painfully Ul .. He bundled the man into his motor car and started to drive him to his home. but on-the- way the motor car akid- ded. bit a tree and then plunged over *be embankment. Mr. Knot was kul- ed-almost instantly, and his friend was badly injured. The latter is In a hospital at Kansas City.

ORDERS INQUEST IN SLAYING HERE


Officer -Wins Plea for Cor- oner's Investigation of Exoonviet's Death:


Though Dr. Murray C. Btone. Greene county coroner. was satisfied today by a brief investigation of the fatal shooting of Walt Cassell. 28- year-old ex-convict, by a city police- man here Saturday night, the offl- cer involved demanded an inquest und the coroner agreed. to conduct one at 4 o'clock this afternoon.


The inquest into Cassell's death will be in the municipal courtroom at the city police station. Doctor Stone was presented & long list of witnesses by police, but he thought only a few of them would be neces- sary. K. C. Smith, motorcycle offl- cer, who shot and killed 'Cassell as the man fled from the city jall Sat- urday night, urged the coroner to conduct an inquest, and Doctor Stone decided ne had a right to one if he wished it.


Parenta Boek Inquiry


Parents of the slain man appeared today at the office of County Attor- ney George Skidmore to ask an in- restigation of the shooting. Mr. Skidmore told them It appeared that Smith had fired the shot while car- tying out the law, and that no action could be taken.


Caswell, who was wanted by Sheriff Marcell-Hendrix -to. serve .six months on a one-year sentence for petit lar- ceny and who, police said, was sought eleswhere for burglary, was picked up Saturday on a charge of being drunk He was locked In the fall at the rear of the police station, while W. W. . McCallister, held on a liquor charge. was placed in a cell on the second floor of the police station.

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. Feb. 12- (AP)-Roy Galen Beadle. 21. Was in- stantly killed Bundsy erening when a sled, on which be was riding with two companions behind & motor car. swerved from the road and crashed into a telephone post. Beedle's neck was broken.


Wilbur Sing and Clay Cost, the other two young men riding the sled. were injured.


Beadle was a junior at Quart Wu- leyan college at Carthage, and a ton of Mr. and Mrs. Roy S. Beadle of this city.

Funeral Conducted .. At Mountain Grove For Ozarks Pioneer


MOUNTAIN GROVE. Mo., Feb. 12- John Eklund. 84. ploneer settler In the Ozarks, died at his home near Mountain Grove Sunday Funeral services were conducted by the Res- crend F. J. Light and burial was in the Swedish cemetery at Mountain Grove.


Mr. Eklund came to America from Stockholin, Sweden, In the spring of 1800. After three weeks crossing the Atlantic he landed in New York City and then came to Chicago. For two and one-half years he worked on the rallroad in Michigan and Missouri. He helped to build the Frisco line between St. Louis and Springfield and on to Mountain Grove.


M :. Eklund then took a homestead one and one-fourth mlies northwest of Mountalu Grove' and for several years endured privation and hard- ships. He carried lors on his shoul- der for the first house he built on this land. He broke up the first acre of land he cleared with a spade and cultivated his corn with a hoe. He worked at home through the spring and early summer, then, worked in Iron mines or on the railroad the re- mainder of the year to make a living. He walked wherever he went as he had no other way to travel. The closest grist mill was Hartville and he carried his grain four or five miles to a neighbor who had a joke of ozen that they might make the trip to the mill.


There were many deer and wild turkey in those days and Mr. Eklund used to recall having seen 30 to 40 In a bunch at various times. He took up plastering, brick laying and stone work which gave him employment -

close to home as the town began to bulld.


Mr. Kkiund was married to Chris- Line Swenson, also of Sweden, in 1871 Ind the And eight children, stl of whom are dead except one son. Edward Eklund. Mr. Eklund was member of the Church of God.


BILLINGS YOUTH DIES OF INJURY


Third Victim of Auto, Train Crash at Billings Dies in Hospital Here


The toll in the railroad crossing crash at Billings Sunday afternoon was Increased to three with the death of Bernaud Berghaus, 17, at St. John's hospital bere Monday afternoon at 5 o'clock.


Paul Berghaus. 14. son of Mr. and Mra. L. F. Berghaus of Built.gs, und a brother of Bernaud, and Roy Wal- ters. 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Baxter of Billings, were the other two victims.

Paul .. Berghaus and Roy Walters were killed instantly when the Ford touring car in which the three boys were riding was struck by Frisco fast mail train No. 4 as it passed through Billings about 4:40 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The automobile, which was towing a sled on which several girls were riding, stalled on the cross- ing and was hit by the train before the boys could jump to safety.


The girls on the shed among who was Miss Frances Bergbaus, 16. sister of the Berghaus boys. escaped injury.


The two younger boys were killed Instantly, but Bernaud Berghaus was ulivo when found and was taken to St. John's hospital in this city, where he died twenty-four hours later with- out regaining consciousness.


Funeral services for Roy Walters were held this afternoon at the First Baptist church in Billings, in charge of the Reverend T. B. Liteinger.
