THE WASTEBASKET Into which are often tossed things well worth while. L6

.One would have to hark back for, best & bull century." to find It

cept"by"Couperld ago, Water street was, alony . much of Its windings, a. veritable" Jover's lane. Memories of this lane of traffic dale back to when Wilson creek-Jordan, so called even in those days because of Its popularity for baptisings-was a apring fed stream of outstanding beauty. In those days Water street meandered along the south bank of Jordan. much of its way through groves of walnut, elm and sycamore. The hill- side on the south was wooded; limestone boulders outcropping, here and there, with bits of bluff, where ferns grew and spring beauties and anemones appeared in early spring.

Water street had its beginning in the 70's, as now, at its intersection with Main street .. ' A narrow Lime- stone bridge spanned the creek where Main crossed. From this point to Boonville, where a wooden bridge crossed the stream, was a favorite place for picnics, shaded with forest trees and watered by several springs. The main building of The Springfield Wagon company over hung the creek just below Boonville bridge, as did a great old rambling hotel Just beyond.

At the cross-road of Water and Boonville In those days was a busy center. Many of the Important re- tail stores of the village were within a block each way. Coopers, Suttern, Heers. Marx, Gottfried, Haggertys, the Eagle par's gun shop and many other early merchants were grouped about these corners.

Water street "from Boonville an important. lane.of traffic, lead- ing well out into the country .. It was not . a busintas street, as now, but had scattered along it some very pretty' homes." Beyond Robberson avenue, then a steep hill-side alley, used principally by the. Burdens as path down to the spring at its foot,

extended a quarry to Jefferson ave -.

nue : The quarry, Little used, overgrown with -weeds and brush, and topped with a high board fence protecting central :chool.

Beyand, Jefferson, East Water street passed by quite a little settle- ment of homes as far as Benton. Here the valley was given over to negro cabins, clustering around & negro church, famous for protracted revivals and camp-meetings. Oppo- site the church was a fine old home surrounded with cottonwood trees. Then"came the cotton mill on the north with a stretch of oak and hickory trece, interspersed with hawthorns and crab apple to the south. Beyond was the open coun- try. A What a change 50 years makes in a street, any street. At least, any American street. It is to tear down, obliterate, destroy and rebuild. Not a bulkting that 'stoed along Water

ithe cotton mill .which is now ch uo -. used foundry. The country road, of half a century pust, is one of the city's busy throughlares, Business of various kinds line it. A railroad occupies the location where ran its shaded lane. The cress-choked spring branch is now & covered sewer. Gone are all the forest trees and woodland dwellers. Springs that were once camp sites and picnic places have ceased to flow. Can you imagine a greater transformation ?
