Bald a politician: "It is quite certain George W. Hendrickson will have no opposition for reap- polatment. as postmaster. Under the rules ah. Matadidates must take a tivil' service czamimatica and he has already passed. He could do so again without trouble and Is qualified. Then there must be some political influence; It does not foi- low that the que taking the highest grade will . be appointed. The department is given certain latitude. This means the senator or member of ronerees will be elven the right to appoint one of the ellgibles. . The postmaster is strong there elso. Strictly speaking all appointments may be"mude by the senators If they are of the same political laith as the administration but in Missouri only one of the senators is a republican and he can pass out all ple if he wants to hot be will follow „tha.old rule and let congressman name the post- masters in their districts where there are repub- lican congressmen. This would place the ap- pointment of tha Springfield postmaster in the handa of Congressman Palmer of Sedalla. He Is for Hendrickson and the incident la closed."

Then It was mentioned it was not always thus. Postoffice fighta used to be terrible things In the -

days of Cleveland. Harrison, Mckinley and Roose- " velt. Since then the pressure has not been Mo great, due: probably to the fact that business of- fors so much better opportunities than anything the government has to offer.
