The Werner family. it is under- stood, has never, since first learning of the young couple's desire to be married. been very friendly toward young Groves. Her parents took the girl away from him, locked her in a room, and ordered the bridegroom away soon after they returned yes- terday afternoon to the amall . It was only a year and a half ago that citizens of Springfield quickly raised a fund and built Mrs. Marple's cozy little residence after the home which she had built was destroyed by fire. A widow, the mother had in support her daughter and a younger son by manual labor.

Although he"is 50 years old, this foot-is not stopping Obaries E. Har- wood, oneof the founder of Drury college. from forneying here this week to attend the commencement exercises which begin Monday. Word was received here Wednesday that Mr. Harwood was "on his way to Drury."

He will probably arrive here some- time Saturday. It was indicated In the correspondence received by Dr. T. W. Nadal, president of Drury. While In the city Mr. Harwood will viait with many of his old-time friends


It was in his house of the south- - west corner of what ts now the Drui- ST., campus . Ab; Benton and Central. that the founders"of Drury college fruit met. " There they , drew up charter, based " on those of Oberlin and Olivet colleges, and Incorporated the college

"Mr. Harwood lived bere a long time after the founding of Drury. but moved to California early in 1900. He has returned to Drury several times diace - then, but. has not been here during the past few years.


" He is said to be active despite his age and is expected to make several addresses during the commencement week.

Injured in Shreveport Crash; Body Will Be Taken to Ash Grove, Near Where! She Formerly Lived

Mrs. T. C. Pennell, 36 years old, wife of the Reverend Pennell who for five years was pastor of the First Baptist church at Ash Grove, was instant!y killed Thursday in Shreve- port. La., when the automobile in which she was riding with her hus- band was struck by a train.


Mr. Pennell was only slightly in- Jured. Funeral services for Mrs. Pennell were conducted in Shreve- port today and the bod · will be for- warded to Ash Grove where services will be held Sunday. The hour of the funeral has not been set, but services will be In the Baptist church at Ash Grove and will be - conducted by Dr. Lewis M. Hale, pastor of the First Baptist church in Springfield.
