SHOT INSTANTLY KILLS FAIRFAX, MO., RESIDENT .-
Survivor Accuses Man Living Near Scene; Shooting Re- calle Another !aichi Core eral Years Ago
A RMED posses of Howell and Ozart county farmers last night were scouring the hills and woods in the vicinty of Sycamore, Mo .. for the men who fired from ambush Into an auto- mobile near there and killed a young farmer and wounded his wife, small son and brotherinlaw yesterday morning
Orville Shipley. 22-year-old farmer .. waa Instantly killed by a charge of buckshot which struck left breast. Bir code old son suffered fish younde Laon ; from surno the body
The shooting is ahrouded In mys- tery and Ozark county officers and
light ot. the affair. Family quarrels and feuds were believed, however, to be Involved.
The only clue as to ine Identity of the person or persons who fired the shots was the statement of Edward Hurd, brother of Everett Hurd, who also was riding in the automobile; bes: who was not Injured, that he saw tio face of one of the men. and identi- fled him."
ACCUSE'S NEIGHBOR -
Hurd sald the man .
er. 45, farmer living aix miles north of Sycamore. The prece went
to Crooper's home late vesterday after- hivon, but he was not at home. Crooper, officers sald. l:as had many quarrels in the Sycamore neighbor- hond, where both he and the Ship- itys Krite.
They also recalled that about 12 years ago he was charged with ser- lously wounding an Ozark county farmer from ambush. He was 'ac- quitted on an Insanity plea, they I satd.
The shooting took place about . a quarter of a mile from the farm home of young Shipley's father. Alfonzo Shipley, two miles east of Sycamore, where those In the car bad been visiting. They had started to their homes at Fairfax. Mo. They formerly lived near Sycamore.
Although only one man was seen after the shots were fried. opinion differs as to whether there was more that one person in the ambuscade.
Officers found it difficult to make I much headway In their investigation of the shootirs 2 ;: account of the feeling of fear which caused mem- bers of the Shipley family to keep close mouths. They were af:rid that
they might. suffer further violence. If they talked.
-
Edward Hurd told officers that the car was being driven along at a moderate rate of speed when sud- denly a shot was fired from the brush beide the road, not more than 12 steps from the car. The shot struck Shipley, killing him. Another shot - vas seriously Ifyar which hit him in the top Although the wounds were : others. He said that he than saw a man who he positively Identified as Crooper turn and flee through thr is expected to recover.
