Old Springfield was recalled the other day when a ploneer citizen opened an old Bible and found & "funeral notice" of Dr. T : Da ..;. I: $25 > dated. April, 1809. ¿ Iń those days there were no dally papers here and when there was a death funeral notsom printed on book paper with a black border were circulated around the city. The Dalley circular was placed in the Bible and has remained there ever since. Dr. Bailey was one of the hardy men of the days before the civil war and did much to direct the little town on the proper course which made a large city here. At one time Dr. Balley owned nearly all the real estate between Central street and Commercial. The large statue of.« soldier In National cemetery, the one mounted In the renter of the grounds, was given to the government by Dr Ralley. Dr. Bailey had no children and has passed out of mind. except for a few planners, having been dead an years. Yet In his day his name was a household word in this section.

The highest point of the Ozarks and the highest between Kansas City and Memphis, is Cedar Gap. according to Dr. E. M. Bhepard, member of the Missouri board of geology and mines.

There has been much discussion as to whether Seymour or Cedar Gap was the higher, but a new map of official elevations in the state-of Missouri gires the height of Cedar Gap as 33 feet greater. Seymour stands 1659 feet above sea level and Cedar Gap 1692 feet.

1

A former survey placed the altitude at Seymour at 1642 and that of Cedar Gap at 1675. This sur- vey, made. in 1900 has been declared incorrect by geological and goedetic boards of the state and bench marks have been placed to show the newis - designated altitudes.
