Mra. Katherine Tingley, theosophist leader. is dead and abe - was about as remarkable a person; as Almee McPherson. Her California retreat was oos of. the interesting retreats of the world. Her influence extended to Springfield 'and Professor Darrow of Drury, a highly educated man, was completely carried away with her teachings. He finally quit and went out to California so as to be near his idol. Drury never tells why anyone quits. Whlle here Professur Da .....

- quite a muss. He presented the city library a set of books on theosophy and It was rejected be- cause considered an attack on the Christian re- ligion. The professor gave out some interviews on freedom of thought, the right to religious be- liefs and so which caught the eye of Reverend C. H. Briggs, militant Methodist. The veteran minister skinned the professor in a masterly way one night in St. Paul pulpit and it enraged the professor to the bolling point, especially one atate- ment where it was sald the professor was "seat- ter brained." The professor went over and con- sulted Thomas J. Delaney and carried a handful of money. The lawyer happened to be a little short at the time but told the professor he would not be able to collect any money in the deal. The professor sald he did not want money but vindi- cation. The lawyer sald he might get that but no money. The professor and his money were soon parted and sult was brought for damages. The circuit court dismissed the case and an appeal was taken to the supreme court. It remained there for a long time and was !! na !! y decided In favor of the minister. The supreme court n'as comethat proved about anyone taking up its time with such a matter and said wania die- alon. Then Professor Darmow went out .to Cali- . fornia where he became connected with the Ting. ; ley plant.
