Mrs. Allce Johnston, who died in Philadelphia the other day, was of a pioneer Springfield family that has passed out of the life of: : this city, although prominent here 30 years ago. Her husband, Calvin


Springfield and and in earlier days was located in Virginia City, Nevada, a town which he laid out. Hht brother,Milton. M. Joborton, was an early marshal of the city. The marchal was what is now


chief of police .and he was elected by the people. boot were quite prominent in the early affairs of the city. Calvin Johnston, a short-story writer. who has made the Saturday Evening Post. started as a railroad man and was at one time southwest- ern passenger agent of the Frisco with headquar- ters at Dallas. He served under Bryan Bnyder. Iraffe passenger manager. and when Snyder re- tired Johnston did also. Another son, Darwin John- ston, was a letter carrier and popular with the

He planned to make his father postmaster and he "quoctedid, Ha organised a democratic club, com- posed'of about a dosen friends with himself as president. It was called the Moccasin club. Then he arranged a big banquet at the Metropolitan hotel and among the guests were W. J. Stone. Congressman Charles H. Morgan, Congressman John T. Heard, who represented this district, and others of quel prominence.


At the banquet there were many prominent Springfield politicians' with club badges on, but they were not members of the club. The younger Love did not want them in just then. He wished winplate control of the club Trading democrats of the state gave their endorsement to Colonel Lova for postmaster. Congressmar: Hcard was espe- cially impressed with the Lic demonstration. The letters of the big guns were followed up by ringing endorsements of the club, which never had more thati a dozen members and met no more after the state leaders had been lined up. Congressman Heard'went to work for Colonel Love, but struck -


& anag in Postmaster General Blive !!. The post- master general was impressed with the tremen- dous petition from the rank and file for John- ston and mid plainly be wanted to appoint John -. aton. The congressman argued and finally Bissell said he would appoint Colonel : Love, but that Johnaton must be named assistant postmaster. The congressman agreed to this and Colonel Love was named. Johnston served as assistant through- out the Cleveland administration and gave war to George Hendrickson when Mckinley came in. Dar ! Johnston retired from the government service then and died a short "Mind titel Y respected citizen.
