An order from the Confederate government to advance on Lyon settled the argument between McCulloch and Price. The Confederalo army moved along the fayetteville road to Wifaoo'a Creek, 10 miles southwest of Springfield. In the meantime, Lyon at Springfield, had called on General Fremont at St. Louis for more troops. Fremont refused and Lyon knowing .. himself hopelessly outnumbered, cursed Fre. mont and hta message.


On August ? another message came from Fremont. . \galo he re- thand help and ordered davon to hold Springfield. Iron derd'ail to surprise ibo Confederates with an army less than half their number. The Associated Press CARTHAGE Mo .. March 23-W. E. Huffman, 47, & farmer of nea: Jasper, Mo. died last night in a hospital here from burns received when he rushed into a flaming brooder house, erroneously belley- ing his 4-year-old son, Jackie. was inside.


He collapsed as he emerged and Sell back in the flames. His wife dragged him from the building. She also wasb urbed badly.


The boy started the fire while playing with matches. The flames . Spread to the Huffman home which ¿ was destroyed.

1 After the battle of Wilson Creek the federal army left Springfleid. Many of the wales sympathizers loft with thein as they feared the Confederatea. The long train of wagons, 2 rulles long, headed toward Rolle unmolested by their enemy.


About 11 a. m. August 11, 1861, the first Confederate troops appeared in Springfield. McCulloch and I'rice neither mado any effort toward harsh treatment and as a rule. even the uotonists were satisfied with the treatment re- celved, Lyon's body, brought from the field to Sprlogfield, was guarded hy the Confederaten until a delegation from St. Lonis. took the body away on August 23, 1861.


"Respect for the rights of unlon men was promised.by-the Con- 3) federate authorities and outside of a few arrests. there were no difficulties. For a brief season there were few cvidences of war .except for the uniforms and even with the war so close at hand there were some festivals. Many families of the Confederate appleate and onidiora came to visit them in Springfield at this time.
