ENID.
The county seat of Garfield county. Is one of the most prosperous cities in Oklahoma, third in population, and the largest city on the Rock Island Sys- fem in Oklahoma or Indian Territory. It is also a division point of the Frisco System, with their extensive machine
and repair shops and roundhouse. gis - ing employment to a large force of skilled mechanics with a monthly pas roll averaging over $50,000 distribuite !! at this point. There are other railway lines building to Enid-the Denver. Enid & Gulf and Arkansas Valley & Western-and four others surveyed. which will afford ample railway fa- cilities second to no city in Oklahoma and encourage many additional mant facturers and wholesale houses to locates here: owing to
its ad- vantages as a distributing point and enviable location for a larger city. The town site of Enid and the land sur- rounding was opened to settlement on Sept. 16, 1893, and was all taken np in a few hours. Unlike the town sites in original Oklahoma. Enid was plat- ted 'and streets. alleys and public squares were reserved before the open- ing .thereby avoiding part of the con- fusion incident to the opening of new towns. and being located in the ban- ner agricultural county of Oklahoma. and backed up by the aggressiveness of popular business men and the un- ceasing efforts of the Enid Commer- cial Club the growth has been he- yond the most sanguine expectations, until now she has a population of 8,000 prosperous citizens. enjoying good homes, constant employment and a fine climate. Enid has two large fouring mills, seven grain elevators. an extensive bridge and structural iron plant, one cotton gin. one broom fac- tory, one ice plant, a complete tele- phone system. with lines running in all directions, thereby connecting Enid with Kansas City and all towns in every direction. an electric liglit plant. three daily and five weekly news- papers, twelve churches, five public schools. "one business college. ten wholesale houses, five hotels, four banks, brick court house. a large brick opera house, a system of water works. a foundry and machine shop, three bottling works, a steam laundry, plan- ing mill, sash and door factory. a steam brick manufactory and two brick yards, fino briek business houses and all kinds of mercantile businesses being represented. Enid has over 1.6 children attending school daily. be-

sides a large number in attendance at her business college. The people of Enid are of that substantial. enterpris- ing and generous class that makes a community solid and insures a sturdy and permanent growth. The business streets are lined with substantial brick Mlocks, and the residences are of the latest designs and of the class famil- iar to our large eastern cities, with parks here and there through the city. The land around Enid produces the finest flour wheat in the world. and sells on the market for more money than wheat grown farther north. 5,000,000 bushels of wheat raised in Garfield county in 1900. Oats, corn, barley. rve and other grains do equal- ly as well. Fruit and all kinds of vegetables are grown here successfully and at a great profit. Stock of all kinds, horses, cattle and hogs. are raised here and fed throughout the year on green feed. Our native grass, which is very nutritive in the summer. and our wheat fields in winter keep our stock in good growing condition the year round. There is no country in the world where the wheat sown in September, as ours is, will permit the pasture of stock all winter unt!l the following March without injury to the wheat. Thereby we save the cost of grain usually fed to stock through the winter months in other sections, and our stock is raised and sold at large profits. The county is watered by Turkey. Skeleton, Black Bear. Ot- ter. Spring and Coldwater creeks. The soil is unsurpassed in fertility, and there is an abundance of moisture for all agricultural purposes. It is readily - seen that no better country than this can be found for the settlor with small means, and where the advance in land in the near future will make a hand- some profit.
