Population. 1,500. Dating its settle- ment from 1893, is the judicial seat of Grant county, and is located on the Salt Fork of the Arkansas river. and on the C., R. I. & P. Ry., 28 miles south of Caldwell. Kansas, and 300 southwest of Kansas City. Grant county is one among the extreme northern tier of counties adjoining Sumner and Harper counties, Kansas. It is 26 by 38 miles in area, containing $5,000 square acres of excellent land. mostly composed of rolling prairie, with nearly one hundred clearly de- tined water courses distributed througout its entire area. The alti- inde is 1158 feet above sea level, which is a happy medium between arid plains and malarial marshes. The soil varies from a black waxy to a black and chocolate free loam, very rich in ver- etable matter and easily tilled. The prodnets of the county embrace coi-


ton. corn of all kinds including Kafir and broom, castor beans, oats, barley. rve. sweet potatoes. Irish potatoes. fruit, produce. live stock. cattle and hogs. Wheat is extensively grown. In 1900 there were 2,600,000 bushels of wheat harvested in this county aud during the past year over 2,500.000 bushels were exported. The city has churches of the Baptist. Christian. Congregational.
