Population 3.300. The county seat of Cleveland county. the most beauti- ful, prolific. well-settled and advanced of any Oklahoma county. The gem of the west-is one of the southeast counties of Oklahoma, bounded south and west by the Chickasaw nation. separated from same by the South Canadian river. embraces 500 square miles. or 320.000 acres. The surface of the county is mostly prairie and slopes gently to the south and east to the Canadian river. to which its sur- face waters flow. Small streams are numerous, giving the land a rolling surface and a good drainage system. Thousands of acres of rich valley land and in fact no quarter section of the county but what is susceptible of cul- tivation and capable of producing a great variety of products. The fa- mons winter wheat of the Dakotas flourishes beside the cotton plant of the fertile southern valleys. Norman is situated on the Santa Fe R. R .. about 18 miles south of Oklahoma City. 49 miles south of Guthrie and 118 miles from Kansas City. It has one of the most important territorial institutions in the University of Okla- homa. which is well endowed with a permanent income from lands granted for its support. besides a biennial ap- propriation from the legislature. There are two banks. three weekly newspapers. opera house, library, cotton seed oil mill. artificial ice plant, a good sys- tem of waterworks owned by the city, large flour mill with 200 barrels daily capacity, three cotton gins, two grain elevators. numerous well stocked gen- eral stores and special lines. enjoying prosperous trade.
