CHICKASHA.
Population. 8.000. Is situated on the banks of the Washita river. in the northwestern part of the Chickasaw Nation, 177 miles north of Ft. Worth. Tex .. and 414 miles southwest of Kan- sas City, Mo .. on the main line of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Rys. By its geographical position Chicka- sha is a natural distributing point for the towns and settlements cast. south and west for a radius of 75 miles. At present the Rock Island branches off here in a westerly and southerly direc- · tion to Anadarko and Lawton in the newly opened Kiowa-Comanche coun- try, or due southwest to Mangum, and the Pan Handle of Texas. This branch is now being extended east from Chickasha to Paul's Valley, I. T. The Frisco and Santa Fe systems have likewise both projected lines to run severally from Oklahoma City and Purcell, Ind. Territory, the completion of which is but the matter of few months. This will make Chickasha an important railway junction. The Rock Island are building new shops and roundhouse here. with room for 500 mechanics and laborers. The city is incorporated. has U. S. Com -. missioners' Conrt. 3 banks. a steam flouring mill and a wind grist mill. 2 grain elevators, a cotton seed oil mill. an iron foundry and machine shops. steam laundry, bottling works, a 20- ton ice plant, a cigar factory, an opera house, 2 daily, 1 weekly newspapers, and every line of ordinary commercial enterprise. The country about is made up for the most part of rolling prairie farms, the soil of which is a dark sandy loam, well adapted to produce good cotton, grain or cereals. Some of this country is well watered by timbered streams, in the fertile valleys of which nature has furnished all the pre-requisites to make an industrious farmer rich. There are Episcopal.
Baptist. Methodist, Presbyterian. Christian and Roman Catholic church edifices here with each an incumbent and a well organized congregation. Public schools for both races are found with an enrollment of nearly 1.500 pupils, besides numerous private classes in the various arts, physical culture. Social, literary and musical clubs and coteries have been started. while Masonry, Odd Fellowship and Pythianism are represented by af- Anent lodges. These and a number of beneficiary orders, notably a lodge of Elks 100 strong, meet at regular intervals, and are well attended. The business portion of Chickasha has re- cently been the scene of + large fires. Looked at with an eye to the future, however, these conflagrations ought not to be called disasters, for there is already in course of construction a number of handsome brick business blocks to replace the cheap structures that stood there before.
