MOUNTAIN PARK.
Population, 900. Formerly known as Burford, is an incorporated town in the southwestern portion of Kiowa county and on the Blackwell. Enid & S. W. Ry, 30 miles south of Hobart. the county seat. banking and shipping point, and 5 miles east of Red River. The town site is surrounded on three sides by the rich farmiing lands of Otter Creek Valley, while 1/4 mile north of it Tenderfoot mountain stands out. an abrupt precipice nearly 1.500 feat high. At or near the southern town line the Oklahoma & Western Ry. crosses the B., E & S. line. Has Bap- tist. Methodist and Presbyterian churches. 2. banks and 2 newspapers. The name Mountain Park was derived from a park or grove of heavy timber. consisting chiefly of walnut. hackberry and elm trees, which grow on the banks of the Otter close by. Mountain Park owes its rapid progress chiefly to the wonderful fertility of the soil in the neighboring bottoms, which were rapidly taken up by settlers from every section of the continent, but chiefly by agriculturalists of experi- ence in Texas and southern Oklahoma. Noue of the professional or commercial pursuits have been overcrowded here. as is found to be the case in some of the newly made towns of this and the surrounding counties. W. B. Poole. postmaster.
