Population. 4.000. The county seat of Payne county, is located on the east- ern Oklahoma branch of the A., T. & S. Fe Ry., 50 miles east of Guthrie. The town site of Stillwater is a part of the tract known as Oklahoma prop- er, which was thrown open for settle- ment in April. 1SS ?. At the first ses- sion of the Oklahoma legislature it secured one of the most important of territorial institutions. the Agricultural and Mechanical College, which is lib- erally endowed by the general govern- ment, and is further sustained by ter- ritorial appropriations. The college


campus and experiment station grounds occupy 200 acres. Four main buildings are now occupied for the pur- poses of instruction and experimenta- tion. The faculty numbers 24 pro- fessors and there are over 500 stu- dents. The city is pleasantly situated amid rolling prairies, and is sur-


rounded by some of the most fertile lands in the territory. The county is thickly settled and the city enjoys an extensive trade. Cotton, grain, fruit, produce and live stock constitute its principal products of export. The city has a fine system of water works, a fire department and an opera house seating 1,000. The business houses and office buildings are mostly built of brick and stone, and there are many large. well stocked general stores and special lines. There are numerous churches of the various denominations and good public schools occupying commodious brick buildings. The press is ably represented by 4 weekly papers and one daily, and the Okla- homa Law Journal, a monthly publi- cation. There are $ banks, & hvitis, among which the Hotel Youst is the recognized headquarters of the travel- ing public. There are 2 cotton gins, a large flour mill and grain elevator. ice plant, 2 brick yards, a planing mill and a wholesale grocery.
