MOUNTAIN VIEW.
Population. 1.200. An important sta- tion on the Mangum Br. of the C., R. I. & P. Ry .. 41 miles west of Chickasha. It is situated at the extreme sonth- eastern corner of Washita county, 25
miles from Cordell, the county seat. For the past 14 years (when the first farming was done in the immediate vicinity), the rich bottom lands in the valleys of the Washita River have vieldea fine crops of wheat. cotton and corn. Eighty bushels of corn to the acre in good season is not only pos- sible, but has actually been produced. The townsite after two attempts at location was finally moved to its pres- ent place on the summit of one of the Wichita Mountains, one mile north of the depot. The sublime view to be oh- tained from here of the surrounding peaks gave rise to its name. Recently when the county seat was moved from Cloud Chief to Cordell a number of the former thriving enterprises moved here. There are here most of the business lines 'that go to make up a complete town. Two cotton gins. a corn mill. a large brick yard and a cold storage plant. Each fully equipped. are kept very busy during the various seasons, and the railway officials tes- tify to the fact that Mt. View has al- ways been a heavy cattle shipping point. One weekly newspaper, 2 banks. long distance and local telephone serv- ice are every one doing a profitable business. The comfort of the travel- ling public is well looked after in the matter of hotel accommodations, either at the Calhoon Hotel or the City Ho- tel and restaurant. A very inviting prospect is held out in Mountain View for a flonr mill. a cotton compress. an ice factory or a bottling works. The climate and mountain air is better than at many world-famed health re- sorts, and a large mineral spring near town has been found to contain prop- erties that will cure skin diseases. H. Tel .. Population 800. An incorporated town on the A, T & S Fe Ry and on Beaver Creek in Mulhall township Logan county, 14 miles north of Guthrie, the judicial seat. It dates its settlement from 1889 and was then known as Alfred, but when the town was organized in 1900 the name was changed to its present one in honor of one of its chief promoters, Z. Mulhall. Who resides here and is one of the leading live stock shippers of Okla- homa. There are Catholic. Christian, Methodist, Episcopal and Presbyterian churches, good schools, 2 banks, a rol- ler flour mill, grain elevator, cheese factory, 2 hotels and a weekly news- paper, the Enterprise. 9 miles south of the Kansas state line and 76 miles north of Guthrie, the ter- ritorial capital. The country sur-
rounding Newkirk is undulating prairie, very fertile, yielding large quantities of corn, oats, poultry, live stock and other products belonging to this latitude, but it is especially adapt- ed to the raising of wheat, Kay being the banner wheat county of Oklahoma. There are a number of valuable stone quarries in the vicinity, from which both building and pavement stone are obtained. These yield a profitable re- turn to the investor and give em- ployment to labor. The town has five church buildings-Catholic, Christian, Congregational, Methodist and Pres- byterian. It has a commodious school building modern construction, where a well graded course of study has been established. On the public square, which belongs to the county, is a well built, frame court house, with fire proof vaults. It has excellent ship- ping and passenger service on the A. T. & S. Fe Railroad and a new line is being extended to the southeast. It has three banks. The leading secret and fraternal orders are represented.
