MANGUM.,
Population. 3,500. The county seat of Green County and the western ter- minus of the Mangum line of the C., R. I. & P. Ry., is situated on the south fork of the Red River. about 10 miles west of the main or north fork of the same anu 50 northeast of Quanah. Teaxs. The U. S. Land Department have established a branch office here. 'The first settlers came here from Texas in ISS4. but the country was not regularly opened up for homestead entry until the act of Congress of .anuary 18th. 1897. Greer county is extra large, and almost all of it very rich and fertile. Cotton, wheat. oats, corn. milo, maize, sorghum, millet and in fact all staple crops produce in remarkable abundance, and fruit and vegetables do well. The whole county is finely watered with never failing creeks, and the average rainfall has been such as to make good crops of all kinds the next thing to a certainty. The mountains east of Mangum con- tain a supply of granite and other building stone in quantity sufficient to supply the world. Two cotton gins. a flour mill, an ice factory and other industries run at full blast in their re- spective season. There are 2 National and 1 State Banks. 3 weekly newspa- pers and a number of prosperous wholesale and retail stores. There are 2 large abstract offices and a number of lawyers and physicians. The Man- gun: Hospital is an institution that would reflect credit on a large city and draws patients from all sections for a radius of 100 miles around. All the
principal churches and secret orders are strongly represented. Emigration of all classes of good citizenship is invir- ed here with the assurance that few ir any of the commercial or professional lines are overcrowded, which cannot be said of some of the towns of west- ern Oklahoma. Good land can be had here at prices ranging from $5 to $15 an acre, and town lots from $1,000 up. Tel., W. U. Exp .. Pacific. Telephone connection. W. C. Shadden, postmas- ter.
