Population, 8,000. This prosper- ous city was first settled about 8 years ago and is located on the (., O. & G. R. R. and on the north bank of the North Canadian river in Pottawatomie county, 5 miles north of Tecumseh, the judicial seat, 45 from Oklahoma City and 75 from Guthrie. Within the present year two new lines of railway will be completed to be- yond here. The new lines building, are the Santa Fe from Shawnee to Paul's Valley and the Ozark Central & Easteru, building from Fayetteville. Ark .. to this city via Muskogee and Okmulgee. I.S. This place is a division joint of the C .. O. & G. R. R .. and the


repair and machine shops of the com- pany are located here, giving employ- ment to a large number of mechanics. The city is substantially built with many fine brick and stone business blocks and office buildings. There are 3 banks. extensive general stores and special lines, also numerous whole- sale houses and manufacturing indus- tries; among the latter are a cotton seed oil mill, artificial ice plant, a cotton mill for the manufacture of fabrics. foundry and machine shop. 2 planing mills, 2 flour mills, cotton compress, five cotton gins and a bot- tling works. The press is represented by 3 daily and 4 weekly papers. The city has good public schools. also a business college. churches of the various denominations and secret and benevolent societies, an opera house with a seating capacity of 1,000 numerous hotels. the principal of which is the Hotel Burt. electric light ing system, a perfect system of water works, local and long-distance tele- phone system. Daily stage lines to Chandler 30 miles north, and to Keokuk Falls. 24 miles northeast. The principal shipments are: cot- ton, about 40,000 bales of which were shipped the


past season. and cottonseed oil products, grain, live stock. produce and potatoes. the latter being an extensive industry here, one association having over 5,000 acres planted in potatoes, and requir- ing daily special trains to carry the product to eastern markets.
