It may require centuries to establish a great nation but Americans have shown that they can build a town in a single day. The north 1% of Sec. 31. Town 2 n., Range 11 w., was the place selected for Lawton's townsite. On August 6th. 1901. it could not be told by any distinctive feature from any other portion of a vast expanse of un- dulating prairie on which the grass waved waist high. Before night. how- ever. many hundreds of the canvass houses along the two principal streets had commercial signs hung out and were able to report a thriving day's business. Night and day for months the din of saw and hammer never ceased until. in less than one-half a vear there stands to-day a modern western city of over 10,000 souls. Lawton does not owe its existence to any of the ordinary physical charac- teristics that have helped to build towns up in years gone by. It was simply located by the Government for reasons of their own. The towns of Anadarko and Hobart, which were chosen at the same time, have advan- tages by their geographical position position which Lawton has not. and probably had the registration and drawing for claims in the new country been carried on in their preginets they would have made a similar showing. During the last week of July and the first week of August 160.000 people thronged to Ft. Sill and vicinity. After the drawing over two-thirds of them
returned from whence they came am of the rest thousands surged lik waves in every direction to hunt th spot of their choice. The greater mut ber, however, steered for Lawton, an the future of a great city was assured The Chicago. Rock Island & Pacifi Ry. have built what is called a loo line. from Anadarko south throug Lawton and parallelling their mai line to Texas. At Lawton this lin forks in southeasterly and southwest erly directions. The St. Louis & Sa Francisco Ry have also built in her
from the northeast, and several otlit roads are projected and surveyed. Th whole country for miles around is do ted with new towns and settlement. These use Lawton as a distributin point. Cache creek runs three-quar ers of a mile outside Lawton's cas line. The soil in the lowlands of thi and other streams is very rich and wi grow almost anything. whilst th ridges are adapted to the raising of a kinds of grain and fruits. Oil and ga have been struck just northeast of th town and evidences indicate an abund ant flow. Many mineral claims hay also been staked off nearby and file upon. This country has long been th cattleman's paradise, and hay will a ways be a profitable crop for years t come. Lawton is the judicial seat ( Comanche county. which is rated as county of the first-class and contain over 30.000 population. The city itse was incorporated soon after the oper ing and maintains a full set of cit officers, including a most efficient D lice force. The Commercial Club h: a membership of nearly 300.
