ANADARKO.

Population, 6,500. Is remarkable for. Its rapid growth. Where the city proper now stands was in August, 1001. an Indian farm. Evidences of this are not yet entirely obliterated. It is situated at that point on the Man- gum line of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Ry., where the Lawton spur branches off. The Wichita river winds circuitously around two sides of the city at a radius of about one mile. The 1. S. Agency, presided over by Lieut .- {c :. James F. Randlott, is built on the river bank, just north of the town. This has been an Indian trading post for over 50 years. About $10,000 are paid out annually in salaries alone to the agency employes, which include

40 Indian police. Rations to the amount of $500,000 or their equivalent, are also here served to several thous- and Indians. The agency Indian school across on the north side of the river has enrolled upon its books sev- eral hundred full blooded Kiowa chil- drvn. Its industrial department is training the youths in agricultural and mechanical pursuits. Anadarko is the county seat of Caddo county. The town site sold at the opening for $146.644.00, all of which will be spent here. The soil is mostly as good as can be found for production of cotton, corn, wheat, oats, rye, alfalfa and other hays. It is as fine a fruit coun- try as there is in the world. Foot hills. well wooded. surround the town at a distance of one to three miles, afford- Iny sood fuel and fencing materials. In these mountains an unlimited sup- ph of hard and soft building stone is Turned. while two large brick kilns are Wwing operated on the city's south boundary line. Commercially Ana- darko is without a peer (considering itx ago in the two territories. both as b. Rand the number of its business **!!!!< and the amount of its business trisactions. . All church denomina- lots have good edifices. The Metho- 4.1. Baptist. Presbyterian. Episcopa- Asis and Roman Catholics have well

established Indian mission schools in or near the town. A 75-ton ice plant. a planing mill, a broom factory, a wind grist mill, two steam laundries. two banks and every conceivable line of retail mercantile establishment can be found represented on its principal business streets. Wholesale grocers are needed. Also capital for a water works. The city is close enough to the river to make this a simple-prob- lem. And the need of fire protection is felt in a pronounced degree. Ana- darko is promised a north and south line of railway, and being in a sense a gateway to the newly opened terri- tories, has a very bright future. Exp., U. S. Tel., W. U. W. R. Dutton, post- mactor.
