Population 1,600. The county seat of Pottawatomie county. Is beautiful- ly situated near the center of the comity. surrounded by phenomenally fertile farms, and is a splendid agri- enltural market, with a trade extend- Ing 35 to 40 miles south. The busi- ness portion of the city is substantially


built of brick buildings. mostly two stories, and with numerous large gen- eral stores and others of special lines. A commodious brick court house and jail. Baptist and North and South Methodist also churches of other denominations and good public schcols. The press is repre- sented by 3 weekly papers. the Repub- lican. the Democrat and the Standard. There are 3 cotton gins, 2 banks and 2 hotels. The Choctaw railroad has been extended about 20 miles south of the city and the Santa Fe will build through from Shawnee during the present year, giving the city two lines of road north and south and south- west. At present there are two trains a day each way connecting at Shaw- nee. 5 miles north with the main ine of the C., O. & G. R. R. east and west. Daily stage to Asher and Avoca. 20 miles southwest. to Burnett, 12 miles also to Moore, 36 miles west. The principal shipments are cotton, live stock, grain and produce. Tel., W. U. Exp .. W ..
