Population 2.600. Dating its settle- ment from 1893, is the judicial seat of Pawnee county and is located on the A. T. & S. Fe Ry .. 73 miles northeast of Guthrie. Increased railway facili- ties will be afforded by the completion of the Arkansas Valley & Western Ry.
from Sapulpa, I. T., on the east, to be extended through this city to Perry and Enid on the west, while the Santa Fe extension will soon be completed. affording a direct line to Kansas City. The town site adjoins the land on which the Pawnee agency was located e previous to allotment. Indian schools are conducted there in substantial two- story brick buildings erected by the government for the purpose. The city is pleasantly located on an elevation giving good drainage facilities and af- fording a commanding view of the surrounding country in every direction. It is lighted by electricity, has a fine system of water works, a thoroughly equipped and efficient fire department. telephone exchange, churches of the leading religious denominations, and one of the best public school buildings in the Territory, built of stone at a cost of over $20,000, with an enroll- ment of 600 pupils and employing 10 teachers. There is a handsome two- story county building in the center square of the city, an opera house with a seating capacity of 600. 3 banks. 4 hotels, 3 live weekly news- papers, 3 cotton gins. 2 compresses (1 round and 1 square bale), a large four mill and grain elevator, an ice plant. etc. The shipments, which are large, embrace cotton, grain. broom corn. hogs .cattle. produce and fruit.
