chosen Speaker of the Assembly over Dr. Sheldon, the Clinton can- didate. On January 29, the day after the organization of the legis- lature, the Governor's friends by a coalition with the Federalists elected the Council of Appointment, namely: Thomas Thomas of Westchester, James Burt of Orange, Judge Edward Savage of Washington, and John Nicholas of Ontario. To balance accounts with the Clinton people for their arbitrary removals the year before, when they controlled the Council of Appointment, the new Council, at their first session, summarily removed DeWitt Clinton from the lucrative and influential office of mayor of New York. Judge Smith Thompson, of Albany, declined to take the position, which was then awarded to Colonel Marinus Willett. On February 16th the Council restored Maturin Livingston to the office of recorder of New York and Dr. Tillotson to that of Secretary of State.
