C
INTRODUCTORY.
In placing this, the Seventh Biennial Volume of the WISCONSIN STATE GAZETTEER AND BUSINESS DIRECTORY in the hands of its patrons, the publishers do so, confident that it will meet the requirements of a large portion of the public, and are satisfied to let it rest on its merits as a work of its class, feeling certain that no more appropriate introduction can be offered than the assurance that nothing has been neglected on their part to secure the utmost thoroughness and accuracy. Very few people who refer to a directory have any adequate idea of the many difficulties encountered by the publishers in the issue of a work of such magnitude as a State Gazetteer, while the utility of a reliable one is undoubted. To secure to the business men of Wisconsin such a work is the constant aim of the publishers, and the eagerness with which the Gazetteer is looked for demonstrates conclusively that the work has become a permanent necessity, while a glance at the large number of advertisements scattered throughout its pages will give some idea of the high regard in which it is held as a medium of this description.
The earlier pages are devoted to descriptive and statistical matter relating to Wis- consin; this is followed by a list of all the postoffices in the State, with a description of the geographical position of each, the population of each place, leading business inter- ests, nearest accessible shipping point when off a railroad, nearest banking point, religi- ous and educational advantages and other useful facts regarding it ; following this is an alphabetically arranged list of all persons engaged in business there, and the whole is supplemented by a voluminous Classified Business Directory, comprising lists of all " trades, professions and pursuits, with name and postoffice address, compiled and arranged under the heading to which each belongs.
No material used in any previous edition has been embodied in this issue of the work. Everything, both as regards business data and descriptive matter, has been pro- cured anew, without regard to the enormous expense thus entailed. The sketches have been carefully rewritten and much additional information added, while a reference to the Classified Directory will show a far more complete and valuable list than has before appeared.
Sincere thanks are tendered those who by their patronage and support materially aided and encouraged the publishers in their work, and also to those who kindly assisted in collecting the information required in the preparation of this volume ; and, in con- clusion, the publishers would say that nothing shall be wanting on their part to main- tain the high standard already attained, and they confidently hope to meet with the recognition the work deserves.
