BAYFIELD. Is located at the ter- minus of the northern div. of the C., St. P. M. & O. Ry, in the northern part of Bayfield county, of which it is the judicial seat, 366 miles northwest of Milwaukee, 21 north of Ashland and 12 north of Wash- burn. It contains Catholic, Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, German Lutheran and Norwegian Lutheran churches, 2 pub- lic schools, one public hall, a handsome and commodious court house, a steam saw mill and a large fish packing establish- ment. A live weekly newspaper, the Bay- field County Press (Rep.), is published. The water works are controlled by the Bayfield Hydraulic Company, and were erected at a cost of $10,000. The Lake Superior Brown Stone Quarries, in the vi- cinity, yield a superior quality of building stone, of which several of the principal buildings are built. Fish, lumber and building stone, are the principal ship- ments. Telephone connection with Wash- burn and Ashland. Exp., Am. and U. S. Tel., W. U. Population, 1,400. Currie G. Bell, postmaster.

BEAVER DAM. A prosperous and enterprising city on the N. div. of the C., M. & St. P. Ry, in Dodge county, 9 miles northwest of Junean, the judicial seat, and 63 northwest of Milwaukee. It is a favor- ite resort for tourists during the summer months, and is located in the center of a wealthy agriculturaldistrict, enjoying every advantage of climate, fertility of soil and beauty of situation. The different relig- ious denominations are numerously repre- sented, and the majority possess handsome and imposing places of worship. The educational facilities are of a superior or- der, in addition to an excellent public school system, it is the seat of the Way- land university, and the city is becoming notably prominent for the liberal and care- ful manner in which such matters are sup- ported and sustained. It contains cotton mills, breweries, pump factory, flouring mills, grain elevators, soda water works, woolen mills, a foundry and machine shop. a tannery, a national bank and numerous large and well stocked special and general stores, handsome residences, etc. The press is represented by one daily news- paper, the Beaver Dam Daily, and 3 weekly, the Beaver Dam Weekly, the Dodge County Citizen and the Argus. The city is lighted by electricity and gas, has an excellent system of water works, a well equipped and efficient fire department, first- class hotels, telephone exchange and all the facilities and appointments of a pro- gressive business center.
