LANCASTER. The judicial seat of Grant county, in the central portion of which it is situated, 86 miles southwest of Madison, 166 southwest of Milwaukee, and 251 northwest of Chicago, is a station on the C. & N. W. Ry, and is one of the most beautiful and healthful towns in the State. Its educational and religious facilities are excellent, and consist of good graded schools, a high school, Baptist, Congrega- tional, Methodist Episcopal, Catholic and Lutheran churches. A flourishing Ladies' Art Class is sustained, and in all respects educationally as well as socially, Lancaster ranks foremost among the towns of its size in the State. Besides the usual number of special and general stores and a thorough representation of the learned professions, the city contains machine shops, a carriage factory, a creamery, a sash, door and blind factory, brick yard, smelting furnace, an excelsior factory, good hotels, 2 banks and 2 weekly newspapers, the Grant County Herald and the Teller, which keep the citi-
zens informed on all current topics of in- terest. The adjacent country consists chiefly of rolling prairie land, which at Lancaster is broken by hills and valleys. A great diversity is thus given to the land- scape, and some of the loveliest scenery in the State is to be found here. The soil is a rich loam, well calculated for the growth of all the cereals, which, with some gar- den produce and live stock, form the chief shipments. Stages to all surrounding points.
