ber of mechanics. Among the wholesale houses may be mentioned McMillan Bros. Co., Armour Packing Co, Swift & Co., Ashland Lime, Salt and Cement Co., Ash- land Commission Co., and J. B. Matthews & Co., these all being located on the railroad adjacent to the W. C. depot. There are 3 National banks, the First, Northern, and Ashland, and the Security Savings Bank. The insurance business is also well repre- sented by the regular Board companies, and there are a large number of live and ener- getic real estate agents. The city contains a great number of hotels of all classes, among which may be mentioned the far- famed Chequamegon, the third largest hotel in the State, and one of the finest summer resorts in the Northwest, which is during the season patronized by thousands of health and pleasure seekers from all parts of the country. There are two daily newspapers, the Ashland Press (Rep.) and the Ashland News (Dem ) ; also two weeklies, the Herold (German) and the Ash- land Times (Ind.), and among the literary institutions may be mentioned the Vaughn Library. The city supports several excel- lent graded and primary schools, also a high school. In addition to the pub- lic schools there is also a Roman Catho- lic school. The Ashland Business Men's Association occupies fine apartments in the First National bank building, and its membership comprises nearly all the prominent men of the city. There are ten churches located here, viz : Episcopal, Methodist, Baptist, Congregational, Pres- byterian, Roman Catholic, Norwegian, Scandinavian, Swedish Baptist and Swed- ish Lutheran. Nearly all the different secret societies are well represented. The city is supplied with water works, gas and electric light plants, and a street railway. There is also a larger theater and several public halls. The city shows a good healthy growth. The iron ore, the product of the Gogebic Iron Range, which is situ- ated from thirty to fifty miles east of and tributary to Ashland, is shipped from the mines to Ashland over the Wisconsin Central and the Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railroads, and by vessels from their mammoth ore docks, the largest in the world and built at a cost of nearly one million dollars. All Lake Superior steamboat lines stop here and steamers run twice a day to Washburn, Bayfield and Madeline Island. Telephone communi- cation with surrounding towns. Express, American, United States and Northern
