ALMA. Dating its settlement from 1852, incorporated as a village in 1868, and as a city in 1885, is situated on the east bank of the Mississippi river, near the mouth of the Buffalo river in Buffalo county, of which it is the judicial seat, and on the C. B. & N. R. R., 30 miles north- west of Winona, Minn., 306 northwest of Chicago, 221 northwest of Milwaukee, 80 southeast of St. Paul. In addition to the usual number of special and general stores, blacksmith shops, etc., the city now con- tains 4 churches, representing the German, Methodist, Lutheran, Reform and Catholic denominations, a high school employing 7 teachers and having a total enrollment of over 500 scholars, a public ball for enter- tainments and meetings capable of seating 700, a bank, a steam saw mill, a brewery, a large flouring mill and a number of secret societies. A well equipped and effi- cient fire department protects the city, and a weekly newspaper, the Buffalo County Journal (Rep.), an ably edited and popular sheet, supplies the news to the people of Alma. Steamers run to St. Paul, St. Louis, La Crosse and all intermediate points. Alma is a prosperous place and improv- ing steadily. The new court house, a fine and substantial building, gives evidence of the progressive spirit of the citizens. Wheat, lumber, live stock and dairy sup- plies are the principal shipments. No bond- ed debt. Assessed valuation of real and personal property, $281,649. Population, 1,425. Mail, daily. Exp .. Am. . Tel., C. B. & N. J. W. De Graff, postmaster.

AMHERST. First settled in 1850, is now a flourishing city in Portage county. on the Wis. Central Line, and on the Wan- paca river, 143 miles northwest of Milwau- kee and 15 southeast of Stevens' Point, the seat of justice and the location of the nearest bank. It contains a planing mill, 3 flouring mills, 3 churches, German Lu- theran, Norwegian Lutheran, and Method- ist, and a school with 3 teachers and 150 scholars.
