The river pre- sents a magnificent power of from 3,000 to 4,000 horse power at this point, and gives factories the unique advantage of a cheap power at one end and lake navigation at the other, with water communication with all lake ports. The C. & N. W. and the C., M. & St. P. Rys pass through De Pere. November 11, 1890, the Shattuck & Bab- cock Co (capital stock $500,000, John A. Kimberly, C. B. Clark, and F. C. Shat- tuck incorporators), paid $100,000 for the greater part of the water power and at once began preliminary work on the larg- est mills in the West for the manufacture of the finer grades of paper. The plant includes soda and sulphite pulp mills and employs from 300 to 500 hands .. In the spring of 1891 the C. & N. W. Ry, built side tracks from the east to the west side of the river, at a cost of $50 000. Three flowing artesian wells furnish an abund- ance of pure water for domestic use and fire protection, and the city is well provid- ed with sewers. De Pere possesses 4 news- papers the News (Rep.), the Standaard (Hol- land), the Volkstem (Holland), and the Brown County Democrat. The city con- tains two high schools, diplomas from which entitle graduates to admission to the State university without examination; 11 churches, 4 hotels, 2 public halls, 2 ele- vators, 2 flour mills, 1 charcoal blast furn- ace, 1 foundry and machine shop, 1 sash, door and blind factory: 6 brickyards, 3 lime stone quarries, 1 tile factory, 1 vase and flower pot factory, 1 saw mill, 1 pump fac- tory, 1 pleasure boat factory, 1 cooper shop. 1 hay press and warehouse, 2 cigar facto- ries, 1 cabinet shop, and the mammoth paper mills. The products of the above mentioned factories, and brick, draft horses, country produce, grain and hay constitute the shipments. During 1890 100,000 tons of coal, salt and general mer- chandise passed through the government
