EVANSVILLE. Incorporated as a village in 1871 and reincorporated 8 years later, is an enterprising village in the northwestern portion of Rock county, on the C. & N. W. Ry, 22 miles south of Madison, 12 northwest of Hanover Junc- tion, 16 northwest of Janesville, the coun- ty seat, and 105 southwest of Milwaukee. Amongst the principal industries may be mentioned the large pump and wind-mill works, carriage and wagon manufactory, tack works, creamery, flour mill, etc. There are also 5 churches, a good graded school, a seminary, a bank and a public hall capable of scating 500. Three weekly newspapers, the Enterprise, the Tribune and the Review, are published, and are ably edited and popular sheets. Live stock, tobacco, butter and cheese, hides and farm produce, with the products of the afore.
