HURLBUT. In Crawford county, 36 miles northeast of Prairie du Chien, the county seat, and 10 northwest of Boscobel, the nearest railroad station and banking point. Mail, semi-weekly. Population, 50. Hurlbut J R, grocer.


HURLEY. Is located on the west bank of the Montreal river, on the M., L. S. & W. Ry, and on the Wis. Central Line, in the extreme eastern portion of Ashland county, 41 miles southeast of Ashland, the judicial seat, and 350 northeast of Milwaukee. The Montreal river at this point is the dividing line be- tween the States of Wisconsin and Michi- gan, and directly across the river is the town of Ironwood, Mich. Since it was platted in 1882, the growth of Hurley has been phenomenal and it is to day one of the foremost business centres in the iron mining district. There are several large iron mines in the immediate vicinity. The town is well laid out, is lighted by gas and electricity, has a well equipped fire depart- ment, an excellent system of water works, large and commodious brick and stone business blocks and handsome residences, good schools, 2 banks, telephone exchange and 2 weekly newspapers, the Montreal River Miner and the Gogebic Iron Tribune. It also contains a brewery, boiler shop, and a machine shop. Lumber and iron ore are largely shipped. Exp., N. P. and U. S. Tel., W. U. Population, 2,500. Mail, daily. F. B. Hand, postmaster.
