BARABOO. The judicial seat of Sauk county, is an important and flourish- ing city, located on the main line of the C. & N. W. Ry., 175 miles from Chicago

119 from Milwaukee and 230 from St. Paul. It is headquarters for the Madison division of the great Northwestern system, and the round house and machine shops for the division are located bere. Some four or five hundred railroad men and di- vision officers are residents, and the amount paid them averages $35,000 monthly. The Baraboo river runs through the city, and furnishes abundant power for driving numerous manufacturing estab- lishments. The city contains 11 churches, 2 banks (one national), 2 flouring mills, a woolen mill, a foundry, 2 planing mills, 1 first-class hotel, a court house, 3 com- modious public school buildings, a finely appointed opera house, the second largest in the State, a well equipped and efficient fire department, and the Baraboo Water Works Co. supply water to the public through a series of pipes extending to all parts of the city. It is lighted by gas, and the Edison method of electric lighting has been successfully introduced. The press is represented by the Baraboo Republic, the Sauk County Democrat and the Baraboo News, all enjoying a good circulation throughout Sauk and adjoining counties. Baraboo is built on a series of hills, 1,050 feet above sea level. The scenery around is very beautiful. The celebrated Devil's Jake is 3 miles south, and the weird and delightful dells of the Wisconsin are within a short drive. During the summer season thousands of tourists and pleasure seekers pass through the city in going to and from these famous resorts. A new Masonic hall, to cost $30,000, will be erected in the near future, and a $10,000 Y. M. C. A. building has recently been built. For a place of its size and popula- tion there cannot be found one anywhere in which the people are more alive to their higher interests, and in which the neces- saries, comforts and luxuries of life in all conceivable forms, are more easily obtain- able than they are here, and no other city offers greater inducements to honest capi- tal and honest labor. Tel .. W. U. Exp., Am. Population, 5,000 David E. Welch, postmaster.
