APPLETON. The judicial seat of Outagamie county, is a prosperous and rapidly increasing city, located in the south central portion of the county, on the Lake Superior br. of the C. & N. W. Ry, on the M., L. S. & W. Ry, and on the Appleton br. of the M. & N. R. R., 185 miles north of Chicago, and 100 northwest of Milwaukee. It is on the grand chute of Fox river, and the vast body of water passing through here from Lake Winneba- go is said to be over 16,000 horse power, to utilize which dams and canals have been constructed at all the rapids on the river. The canal is under the control of U. S. government, and large steamboats can pass from Green Bay to Lake Winne- bago. The growth of Appleton, which has now become one of the most import- ant manufacturing points in the State, has been due, in a great measure, to this vast natural power. Fox River has 50 feet fall within the city limits. Among the more prominent manufactories are paper and pulp mills, woolen, and planing mills, sash, door and blind factories, a hub and spoke factory, 2 towel factories, 2 brewer- ies, large lime kilns, foundries and ma- chine shops, toy and chair factories, 2 farm implement factories, iron works, novelty works, a grain elevator, etc., a large chem- ical pulp mill is in course of construction. The city has broad and well paved streets, is lighted by gas and electricity, has an electric street railway, the Holly system of water works, a well equipped and effi- cient fire department, telephone exchange, 2 banks, first-class hotels, the Lawrence university, good schools, and churches of
