CHETEK. A pleasantly situated vil- lage on lake of the same name and on the C., St. P., M. & O. Ry, in Barron county, 242 miles north west of Milwaukee, 13 southeast of Barron, the county seat, and 14 southeast of Rice Lake, the nearest banking point. Settled in 1870, it contains grist and planing mills, Lutheran, German Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, a district school and a public library. A weekly paper, the Chetek Alert, is published. It is a favorite summer re- sort, and there is good hunting and.fishing in the neighborhood. Grain, lumber, shingles and hardwood are shipped. CHILTON. An incorporated city on the Manitowoc river, and on the M. & N. R. R., in Calumet county, of which it is the county seat, 79 miles north west of Mil- waukee. It contains 2 flour mills, a plan- ing mill, a chair factory, 2 machine shops, 2 grain elevators, a brewery, a malt house. a bank, 2 weekly newspapers-the Wis- konsin Demokrat and the Chilton Times-4 churches-2 Catholic, 1 Evangelical and 1 Congregational-good schools, a public library with 400 volumes, and a volunteer fire department with hook and ladder truck and hand engine. The manufacturing of cheese is the principal industry of the farming community. Land ranges in price from $40 to $75 per acre. Daily stage to Stockbridge. Bonded debt, $7,- 600; assessed valuation of real and person- al property, $475,000. Population, 1,425. Exp., Am. Tel., W. U. George D. Breed, postmaster.

CHIPPEWA FALLS. The judicial seat of Chippewa county, is a prosperous, incorporated city located on the Chippewa river. the Wis. Central Line, the C., M. & St. P., and C., St .: P., M. & O. Rys, 218 miles (air line) northwest of Milwaukee and 11 northeast of Eau Claire. It was platted by H. S. Allen in 1856, and incor- porated as a village the same year. The city contains Baptist, Catholic, Episcopal, Evangelical Lutheran, Methodist Episcopal and Presbyterian churches, good graded schools, an opera house, 3 banks, a brew- ery, 2 sash, door and blind factories, 2 flouring mills, a woolen mill, 2 hospitals and one of the largest lumber mills in the Northwest, and numerous well stocked special and general stores, etc. The press is represented by 1 daily newspaper, the Independent, and 3 weeklies, the Times-In- dependent, Herald and the Catholic Sentinel. The city is lighted by electricity and gas, has an excellent system of water works, a well equipped and efficient fire department, and telephone exchange. Lumber is large- ly shipped. Stages tri-weekly to Flambeau; fare, $2. Tel., W. U. Exp .. Am. and Northern Pacific. Population, 9,000. L. F. Martin, postmaster.
