THE BROADWAY HOTEL, New House, Elegantly Furnished.

198 north of Chicago, 185 northeast of Madison, and 49 northeast of Oshkosh. It is separated from the city of Ft. How- ard by the Fox river, was first settled in 1668 by French missionaries and traders, and is the oldest settlement in the State. It became a U. S. garrison in 1816, re- ceived a village charter in 1838 and a city charter in 1854. Brown county was or- ganized in 1826, when the county seat was located at De Pere, but it was removed to Green Bay a few years later. The vicinity has developed into one of the finest agricnl- tural and grazing districts in the State. The business of raising blooded horses- Norman-Percheron-from stock imported by R. B. Kellogg, has been largely en- gaged in by him and others, both for home and other markets. Exceptional transportation facilities are offered by the M. & N. R. R., the C. & N. W. Ry and the G. B., W. & St. P. R. R. The city is the terminus of the Goodrich Transporta- tion Co.'s line of steamers, giving two reg- ular boats per week from Chicago and Milwaukee, bringing a large number of w% pleasure seekers, beside freight. Hart's Steamboat Line, owned by a local com- pany, run three splendid passenger boats, furnishing a daily line between here and Mackinac and intermediate ports, includ- ing Sturgeon Bay, Marinette, Menomonie, Escanaba, Fayette, Nahma and Garden Bay, and connecting with passenger steam- ers for lower lake ports, Another line of large freighting steamers plies between here and Buffalo. The city enjoys a large wholesale trade in groceries, drugs, crock- ery, fish and other articles. S. J. Murphy & Sons have here one of the largest lum. ber, shingle, lath and planing mill estab- lishments in the State. D. W. Britton employs about 150 men in the manufacture of pork, pickle, syrup and fish packages, his cooperage plant being one of the most extensive in the country. He ships to ten different States, including Missouri river points, Minneapolis, St. Paul, and as far sonth as New Orleans. There are 4 large breweries, manufacturing beer which is shipped to great distances. Two sound and reliable banks, with an aggregate capi- tal of $160,000, have universal confidence. The hotels are exceptionally fine and numerous, with prospect of a new summer hotel for pleasure seekers. Several mineral springs located here are becoming famous for the curative virtues of their waters, which are shipped bottled and in bulk, and in the form of various pleasant drinks, to

all surrounding places. The city and Ft. Howard are supplied with the purest of water for domestic use and extinguishment of fires by first-class water works, drawing their supply from artesian wells about 1.000 feet deep. The newspapers are the State Gazette {Republican, daily and week- ly), the Advocate (Democratic) and Der Lands mann (German), both weekly. The edu- cational facilities are the very best. The public schools are of a high character, and McCunn's Business College is the leading institution of its kind in Northern Wiscon- sin. It draws pupils from other States and has a high reputation. There are also numerous parochial schools, under Catho- lic and Lutheran management. The ca- thedral and bishop's residence of the Cath- olic See of Green Bay is located here, also a Catholic orphan asylum. An Odd Fel- lows' Home has recently been purchased and fitted up in good style. There are 13 churches, embracing almost every shade of belief. The city is lighted by both gas and electricity. Other manufactures are sash doors and blinds. (2 establishments). laundry and toilet soap, carriages and sleighs, machinery and castings, 2 flouring mills, 2 broom factories, spice mills, etc. Stages in the winter connect with Sturgeon Bay, Kewaunee and other places off the railroad lines. The assessed valuation of real and personal property is about $2.000,- 000. Population, 10,500. Tel., W. U. Exp., Am. and U. S. Telephone connec- tion. A. C. Robinson, postmaster.
