DODGEVILLE. A thriving, incor- porated city, near the center of Iowa coun- ty, of which it is the judicial seat, is an important station on the M. div. of the C. & N. W. Ry and on the I. C. Ry, of which it is the terminus. Its settlement dates from 1826, incorporated as a village in 1858 and as a city in 1889. It is located 47 miles west of Madison, 129 southwest of Milwaukee and 8 from Mineral Point. The city contains 3 banks, an excellent high school and good public schools, and churches of the following religious denom- inations: Methodist, Congregational. Prim- itive Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, Evangelical and Catholic. Three weekly newspapers are published-the Chronicle, the Sun and the Eye and Star -- and keep the citizens well informed on all current topics of interest. The manufacturing in- terests consist of agricultural implement and wagon works, flouring and planing mills, a creamery, and a smelting furnace. Land in the vicinity is worth from $30 to $65 an acre, and large quantities of grain, live stock and dairy products are shipped. Considerable attention has lately been given to the rearing and breeding of fine stock in this locality, and this industry, notably that of trotting stock is rapid- ly advancing. The city has excel- lent hotel accommodations, is well repre- sented in well stocked stores, etc. Lead and zinc mines are in the vicinity, and conduce quite materially to the gen- eral interests of the city.
