FOUNTAIN CITY. A flourishing, incorporated city on the C., B. & N. Ry and on the Mississippi river, in Buffalo county, 18 miles southeast of Alma, the seat of justice, and 9 northwest of Winona, Minn., the nearest banking point. First settled in 1850, it now contains Methodist. Catholic, Lutheran and German Reformed churches, saw and planing mills, a cream- ery, 2 breweries, a flouring mill, a public hall capable of seating 800, lodges of the various secret and benevolent societies, and 2 weekly papers, the Buffalo County Re- publikaner and the Alma Blaetter (German). The educational wants are supplied by two good schools. A steamer runs daily between this point and Winona. Stages semi-weekly to Montana. Exp., Am. Tel., W. U. Population, 1,200. J. B.
