JEFFERSON. A flourishing town located at the confluence of the Rock and Crawford rivers, and on the C. & W. Ry, in the center of Jefferson county, of which it is the judicial seat, 45 miles west of Mil- waukee, and 13 south of Watertown. It contains flour and woolen mills, foundries and machine shops, a large boot and shoe factory, a packing house, a furniture fac- tory, an agricultural implement factory, a drain tile factory, 2 tanneries, brick yards, boiler works, a washing machine factory, a grain elevator, 1 cigar factory. a weekly newspaper and 1 brewery. Rudolf He- ger, proprietor of the City Brewery, has quite recently erected an expensive and commodious brewery and malt house, in order to meet the demands of his increas- ing business. There are also a number of special and general stores, mechanic shops, 2 banks and good hotel accommodations. Religion is represented by Catholic, Lu- theran, Methodist and Universalist churches. There are good public schools. It is the receiving and distributing point for a rich section of the country, and is rapidly growing in size and importance.
