BRILLION. A prosperous incorpo- rated village on the M., L. S. & W. Ry, in Calumet county, 15 miles northeast of Chilton, the county seat and nearest bank- ing point, 22 from Manitowoc, 47 from Sheboygan and 99 from Milwaukee. It was first settled in 1873, and now contains flour, grist, planing and saw mills, a fur- niture factory, large lime works and 2 carriage and wagon shops, good schools, 3 churches and 2 hotels. BRODHEAD. Dating it settlement from 1856, and incorporated in 1870, is a prosperous village located on the C., M. & St. P. Ry, and on Sugar river, in Green county, 16 miles east of Monroe, the judi- cial seat, 30 south of Madison, and 90 southwest of Milwaukee. It contains Bap- tist, Catholic, Congregational, Methodist, Evangelical, Episcopal and Presbyterian churches, good schools, a bank, 2 opera houses, 2 first-class hotels, large plow and agricultural implement works, carriage, omnibus and hearse factories, a flour mill, a creamery, machine shop and the usual number of stores, etc., for a place of its size. The press is represented by 2 week- ly newspapers, the Independent and the Register. Good farming lands surround the village and can be purchased from $50 to $75 per acre. Sugar river furnishes especial interest here as being the first place to furnish the wonderful fresh water pearls of Wisconsin, and this indus- try is successfully prosecuted here. Large quantities of hogs are raised, and with butter, cheese, grain, flour, tobacco and the products of the above mention factor- ies form the shipments. Brodhead has a good fire department and the city is light- ed by electricity and has a public telephone. Population, 1,500. Exp., Adams. Tel., W. U. Henry P. Clarke, postmaster.
