EDGERTON. Dating its settlement from 1836, laid out as a village in 1854, and incorporated as a city in 1883, is situated on the C., M. & St. P. Ry, in Rock coun- ty, 12 miles north of Janesville, the county seat, 8 northwest of Milton Junction, 25 southeast of Madison, and 71 southwest of Milwaukee. It contains Methodist, Catho- lic, Baptist and German Lutheran churches, German and public schools, 1 bank, 2 good hotels, 2 large halls, a well equipped fire department, and 2 weekly newspapers, the Wisconsin Tobacco Re- porter and the Edgerton Index. The ship- ment of tobacco is the principal industry, nearly half of what is raised in the State being shipped from this point. Live stock, grain and brick are also exported. Popu- Jation, 2,000. ELKHORN. First settled in 1837, is a flourishing, incorporated village in the center of Walworth county, of which it is the judicial seat, 41 miles south west of Ra- cine and 56 from Milwaukee. It is an im- portant station on the R. br. R. && S. W. div. of the C., M. & St. P. Ry. The vil- lage is the center of a fruitful farming district, and ships all kinds of produce. The village contains an elevator, a lumber yard, a bank, 2 feed mills, brick and tile works, a machine shop, a cigar factory, 2 good hotels, Lutheran, Congregational, Methodist Episcopal, Universalist, Catho- lic, Episcopal and Baptist churches, a graded public school and a cheese factory. A weekly newspaper, the Walworth County Independent, is published. Stages daily to Harvard and White Water. Population 1,408. Telephone exchange. Tel., W. U Exp., Am. Henry Bradley, postmaster.
