JANESVILLE. Located nearly in the geographical center of Rock county. First settled in 1835, and incorporated in 1853, and was made the seat of justice of Rock county in 1839. It is 91 miles north- west of Chicago and 71 southwest of Mil- waukee. Janesville is on the main line of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway to St. Paul, and is the end of a division on that road which also has its machine shops located at this point. Janesville is also on the Mineral Point division of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway. fine water power afforded by Rock river which flows diagonally across the city. The buildings of the city are mostly brick and are solid and handsome structures. A. first-class system of water works, and an efficient fire department are ample security against fires. The city has gas and elec- tric light works, street car lines, fire alarm telegraph, a military organization, a G. A. R. post and numerous secret and benevo- lent associations. Prominent among its benevolent institutions is the city hospital, attended by all the physicians in the city. Janesville will compare favorably with other cities of like population in the num- ber, variety and quality of its places of re- ligious worship. It has 12 church edi- fices, owned and occupied by the vari- ous christian denominations. It has a free public library containing over 5,000 vol- umes. It has seven public schools, a Catholic school (St. Joseph's Convent) and a German Lutheran school. To. bacco raising, now one of the leading industries of Rock county, is of immense value to the city, and has given rise to the establishment of numerous wholesale and jobbing houses in leaf tobacco. Importing and breeding of draft and coach horses is also one of the features of the city, there being several firms engaged in this busi- ness. The manufactures, which are ex- tensive, comprise the Janesville Cotton Mills, employing over 400 hands, woolen mills, several flour and feed mills, agricul- tural implement works, furniture fac- tories, knitting works, 2 planing mills, 2 soap factories, 4 breweries, several car- riage and wagon works, cigar, lumber and box factories, machine shops, a fertilizer factory, 3 shoe factories, a blank book manufactory and many more, too numer- ous to mention. The adjacent prairie land, which is extremely fertile, is valued at from $50 to $100 per acre. The city contains 3 banks, a Turkish bath house and several public halls. The press is represented by the Gazette and the Recorder (daily and weekly), the Signal, the Journal and the Tobacco Leaf (weekly). Janesville has in fact all the attractions, bustle and activity of larger and more pretentious cities, while its manufacturing interest discount those of cities several times its size.
