HAYWARD. The judicial seat of Sawyer county, is located on the Nama- kagon river and on the C., St. P. M & O. Ry, 270 miles northwest of Milwaukee, and 58 south of Ashland. Settled in 1881, it has had a steadily increasing growth and now contains Catholic, Con- gregational and Lutheran churches, a graded public school, a bank, a public library and reading room, a hospital, saw, planing and feed mills, a town hall, grain elevator and court house, good hotels, and numerous large and well stocked special and general stores. An ably-edited and progressive weekly newspaper, the Journal-News (Rep.), is published. The city is lighted by electricity and has an excellent system of water works. Daily stages to Reserve, Round Lake and Glover. Tel., W. U. Exp., Am. Telephone con- nection. Mail, daily. Population, 1,500. Henry Beal. postmaster.
