is the seat of justice of the county bearing the same name, and is 321 miles northwest of Chicago and 84 east of St. Paul. Its name is of French derivation and signi- fies "Clear Water." The main portion of the city is about 31 feet above low water mark of the Chippewa river, the latter is 180 feet above Lake Michigan, which in turn is 589 feet above the sea, making the situation of the city 769 feet above the level of the ocean. Its area is 164 square miles. The soil is a sandy loam and is formed for the most part of disintegrated potsdam sandstone, with vegetable mold in its composition. It is, as stated in an Am- erican supplement to Chambers' Encyclo- pedia, the center of traffic for a radius of 75 miles. The C., St. P., M. & O. Ry, the C., L. M. & St. P. Ry, and the Wis- consin Central line, which is now a part of the Northern Pacific system, all having branches extending in various directions, including those of the pine, hardwood and mineral regions of the North, afford trans- portational facilities possessed by but few cities. The chief water power is supplied by the dam across the Chippewa river, giving eighteen feet head. The dam on the Eau Claire river supplies the linen and other mills with power. The Eau Claire river empties into the Chippewa river at this point. These rivers, spanned by ten bridges, are thickly studded with numer- ous manufacturing institutions, consisting principally of a dozen large saw mills, 3 foundries, a pulp and paper mill, a refrig- erator factory, a sash and door factory, a linen mill, a factory for the manufacture of dynamos and other electrical appliances, & furniture factory which places 1,200 suites a month on the market, a brewery, grist mill and brick yard. tions with all surrounding towns. A. noted characteristic of this climate is its dry, pure atmosphere, which for healthfulness is unexcelled, and is especially favorable to those affected with consumption and other pulmonary troubles. The soil is porous, and the street grades are good but not precipitous, which gives the city un- surpassed natural drainage. There is an abundant supply of fine water. Popu- lation, according to U. S. census in 1880, was 10,118; according to U. S. census in 1890, 17,451. The city of Altoona, a mile and a half from the western limits of the city, has a population of 799, and the suburban villages of Porterville and Bad- ger's Mills a population of 750, making a total of 19,000. The free carrier system is in vogue. The Chippewa river is the second largest river in the State, and its great valley, with its numerous streams, proffers an inexhaustible and readily ac- cessible supply of all kinds of hardwood timber for manufacturing purposes. There are the different varieties of maple, oak, birch, elm, hemlock and bass, all in bound- less quantities. Freight rates on manufac- tured articles are as favorable as those of any city in the Northwest, not excepting St. Paul or Chicago. The advantageous natural location of Eau Claire, its favor- able condition from a sanitary, social and commercial point of view render it singu- larly adapted for the investment of capi- tal for manufacturing enterprises. The city makes steady progress every year, and within the last few years there has been built the McDonough Manufac- turing Company's foundry the Ean Claire Sash and

Door Company's factory, the Pioneer Furniture Com- pany's factory, the Eau Claire linen mill, the Eau Claire Refrigerator Com. pany's factory, the National Electric Man- ufacturing Company's factory, all institu- tions founded on a solid basis and paying large returns upon the investment. The city has more capital invested in manufac- turing and ships more freight by rail and water than any other city in the state except Milwaukee. Liberal inducements will be made for the location of mannfac- turing enterprises. Those desiring further particulars are requested to correspond with H. C. Putnam, President of the Eau Claire Commercial Syndicate and Presi- dent of the Chippewa Valley Bank. Tel .. W. U. Exp, Am. and Northern Pacific! W. W. Winterbotham, postmaster.
