It is estimated that there are upwards of forty miles of cavernous windings. Bituminous coal is found along the hanks of some of the rivers, aud iron of excellent quality in numcrous places. There are many salt springs, from which salt is obtained in sufficient quantities, not only for the supply of Kentucky itself, hut of a great part of Ohio and Tennesscc, Nitre and fine white marble aro plentiful ; also lead, freestone, gypsum and conglomerate. Climate and Soil .- The climato in the eastern and central parts is highly salubrious; hut in the west, especially along the Mississippi, it is unhealthy, no year elapsing without a consider- ahle mortality from fevers. Great oxtremes of heat and cold are experienced in the State; and, considering its latitude, its winters are hoth long and severe. Nearly all the European grains, Indian corn and tobacco, are cultivated. Next to the Ohio and Mississippi, the chief rivers are the Cum- herland, Green, Kentucky, Licking, and Tennessee, which have numerous affluents, and are all tributary to the Ohio. Products .- The soil is mostly fertile, and contains some of the finest agricultural regions in America, producing wheat, maizo, cotton, hemp, tobacco, and all the fruits of the warmer temperate regions. The chief branch of rural industry is the rearing of horses and cattle. The Kentucky horses are of acknowledged excellence, and hred in large numbers. Their superiority is so great that many are sent over the mountains to the Atlantic States, and the principal supply of saddle and carriage horses for the lower country is drawn from Kentucky, Mules are numerous, and of excellent quality; when full grown they average from 15 to 16 hands, and are sometimes 17 hands high.
