PREFACE.
THIS, the third published volume of Watertown Records, con- tains the proceedings of the town from March, 1727, to February, 1745.
The births, marriages and deaths include the years 1738 to 1822, and complete Volume II. of " Vital Statistics " as recorded by the town clerk. About twenty pages of " Purposes of Marriage " found recorded on loose leaves at the end of the town clerk's volume dating from 1792 to 1822 have also been printed, and will be found at the end of the volume.

April 22 Dea : Nathan Fisk's on the 22 Day of April 1728. The Selectmen ordred ye Clerk to write Warrants directed to ye Conftables of sd Town (for ye Calling of a Town Meeting) which were done in the following words.

In obfervance of a preceipt (to us directed) from the High Sherriff of his Majesties County of Middx :
In his Majesties Name You are hereby required to warn the freeholder's and other Inhabitants within the Eafterly & Wefterly Precincts in Watertown abovesd, who are Quallifyed According to Law to vote in the Choice of a Reprefentative, to Meet at the publick Meeting houfe in the Eaft Precinct in sd Town, on Mon- day the Sixth day of May Next Enfuing ye date hereof, at one of ye clock in the After Noon of sd day to Choofe a Reprefentative or Reprefentatives to Serve for and reprefent ye Town of Watertown, At a great & General Court Appointed to be Conviened, held & keept for his Majesties Service at ye Court houfe in Bofton on Wednefday ye Twenty Ninth day of may next enfuing the date hereof.
You are Likewife required to Warn the Freeholders within sd Precincts who are Quallifyed According to Law to Vote in the Affair relating to Watertowns Proportion of the Sixty Thoufand pounds of Bills of Credit Granted by ye Great and General Court to be received by ye Several Town's of this Province. To meet at ye above sd Meeting houfe to meet at Two of ye Clock in the after noon of ye above sd Sixth day of May to know their Minds whether they will receive Watertowns proportion of sd Sixty Thou- fand pounds Bills of Credit, and if they Se caufe to receive the proportion of sd Bills belonging to Watertown aforesd Then to Choofe Truftees to receive sd Bills of Credit and to give sd Truf- tees Directions how sª Bills shall be Lett out.

Allin Flags bounds beginning at the Weft fide of Isaac Pierce Juner his houfe So upon a Streight line between Allen Flagg houfe and Deacon Sanderfons and So up ye lane by John Sanderfons and So to David Meeds including sd Meeds. All the High ways & Town ways on the Eaft side of sd line to the Precinct line.

At Said Meeting Dea : Nathan Fiske was Chofen by the Maj'. part of the Voters To Reprefent ye Town of Watertown at a great and General Court to be holden at Bofton on ye 29 day of May Currant.
1728 At a General Town Meeting of the Freeholders May 6th & oth' Inhabitants of Watertown regulerly Warned and Afsembled on the 6th day of May 1728.

Put to Vote whether the Town will receive their proportion of ye Sixty Thoufand pounds Bills of Credit belonging to Watertown. And ye Vote past in the Affarmitive.
Voted and Choofe M' Jonas Bond L' Samuel Stearns & L' Joseph Coollidge to be Truftees for Watertown to receive sd Towns proportion of ye 60000 £ Bills of Credit.
Put to Vote whether the sd Truftees Shall Lett sd Bills of Credit and in leting them, Not to lett to any perfon under Ten pounds nor to any perfon above Twenty pounds.
And ye Vote paft in ye Affirmative.

We the Subfcribers being a Comtee : Chofen by sd Town to View where the moft Convienant place for to Sett a School houfe in ye East Precinct of sª Town is, so as beft to Accomadate sd Precinct and having viewed and Confidred the Scituation of sd Precinct are of Oppinion that some where Sixteen or Twenty Rods Eaft of ye Meeting houfe in sd Precinct near to M' Sherman's Wall, will be a place moft Accomadating for to Set a Scholehoufe on for sd Precinct.

Livermore, sd Land Lying on the Weft Side of ye Town highway about Thirty rods Northweft from Allen Flaggs Dwelling houfe. Dated at Watertown the 4th day of May 1728. Put to Vote whether the Town do Accept of of Sd Reportes & that the Schoolhoufes be Errected at ye places set forth in Sd Reportes. And the Vote paft in the Negative.
At Sd Meeting Nathanael Bright late Conftable of Sd Town Laid an Acct of John Kings Rates in his Lift of Rates whch were Committed to him to Collect in ye year 1724. before ye Town ; Complaining yt ye Sª King was gone before ye rates was made & defired sd Kings rates Amounting to Twenty Shillings & 2ª might Sink. And the Town Voted y' Sª Kings Rates Should Sinck in cafe he Never came back So as y' Sª Rates Might be got.
At this Meeting the Selectmen ordred the Town Treafurer To pay to M' Sam11 : Jenifon five pounds (of that money due to the Town from Daniel Whetney ) in full For looking After Elnathan Whitney. [6]
1728 At a Meeting of the Selectmen of Watertown July 2d at Thos : Coollidges on July the Second day 1728. At Sª Meeting the Selectmen Agreed to Approbate but one perfon to keep a publick or licenced houfe in Watertown viz Thos : Learned. And to Make a return to the Sefsions as followeth.
To the Hon'able his Majes : Justices of ye Gen11 Seffions of . the peace for his Majesties County of Middx.
The Selectmen of Watertown are humbly of Oppinion that one. Tavern or Licenced houfe in Sd Town is Sifficient for the Accom- madating of Travilers, and the Intereft of the Town, Accordingly the Selectmen Se caufe to Approbate M' Thomas Learned for this prefent Year, and No other.

Augst : 12 on the 12th day of August 1728. At L' Richard Coollidges the Selectmen being informed that one Mary Knap wtb a Child or Children was come into Watertown who came (by Enformation) Laft from Roxbury in ye County of Soffulk. ye Select ordered the Clerk to write a Warrant directed to Joseph Har- rington Conftable to Warn Sd Mary Knap & Child or Children to depart out of Sd Town forthwith, they refufing to Accept of her as an Inhabitant of sd Town.
which was done Accordingly as recorded page ye 7th.
The School being Vacant ye Selectmen defire Lt. Richd Cool- lidge & Dea Thomas Livermore to Endeavour to procure a Sutable Prfon to keep ye Grammer and Englifsh School in Town.
At Sd Meeting ye Selectmen Appointed A Town Meeting and ordred the Clerk to write Warrants to the Conftables of sd Town in ye following words. To the Conftables of Watertown. You are hereby ordred to warn the freeholders and other Inhabitants within the Eafterly & Wefterly Precincts of sd Town who are Quallifyed According to Law to Vote in Town Affairs to Meet at the Publick Meeting houfe in the Eaft Precinct of sd Town on Monday the 26th day of August Currant at Two of ye Clock in the after noon of sd day for ye ends following : firft to know the Towns Mind whether they will choofe a Commite to Seek out and Survey ye Two Thoufand Acres of Land Granted by ye General Court to Watertown and Wefton, or whether they will Sell their Intereft in sd Land. Secondly To know the mind of ye Town, whether for the future they will meet by turns in the publick Meeting houfes in ye Town to Manage ye bufinefs of Town Meetings.

The Selectmen of sd Town are informed that there is one Mary Knap wth her Child or Children come into Watertown Sometime in the Later end of July Laft past who came (by Enformation) Laft from the Town of Roxbury in ye County of Suffolk and Now refides in the dwelling houfe of Jofeph Grout of sd Town of Watertown. She being und' Such Circumbftances ye Selectmen refufe to Accept of her & Child or Children to be Inhabitants in sd Watertown fearing She may prove a Charge to ye Town.
You are therefore in his Majes: Name hereby required forth with to warn the said Mary Knap with her Child or Children forthwith to depart out of Watertown and No longer to Abide therein the Selectmen refusing to Accept of ye sd Mary &c to be Inhabitants in Sd Town. hereof fail not and Make return of this Warrant & Your doings thereon unto the Selectmen or Town Clerk forthwith. Dated at Watertown the 12th day of August in ye Second Year of his Majes. Reign, Anno Domini 1728.

2. Put to Vote whether the Town will choofe Two perfons to be a Comtee for ye end above sd. And ye Vote past in Affarmative.
3. Voted and Choofe M' Thos Learned and M' John Cutting to be a Commtee : for the ends above said.
4. Put to Vote whether the Town do Impower the Committe abovesd (with Such as Wefton Shall Joyne with them) To procure a Surveigher and chain men to be und' oath to Surveigh ye abovesd Two Thoufand Acres of Land, and procure a plat of Sd Land und' ye Surveighers hand and return ye Same to ye General Court at ye Next full Sefsion for their Conformation .* And ye Vote past in ye affirmative.
5. Put to Vote whether it be the mind of the Town to Meet by turns in the Publick Meeting houfes in the Town for the future to Manage the bufinefs of Town Meetings.

The Selectmen Appointed L' Richard Collidge and M' Thomas Coollidge to View the old pound and make Sale thereof and make Report of ye Sale thereof to ye Selectmen at their Next Meeting.
At Sd Meeting the Selectmen ordred the Town Treafurer to pay out of ye Town Treafurey the Sum of Ninety Two pounds Eight Shillings to Jer : Allen Esq' Province Treafurer which is Watertowns Third fifth of the 50000 pound Loan.
At a Meeting of ye Selectmen of Watertown at ye Houfe of Deacon Nathan Fisk's on the 30th day of Septemb' 1728.
the Wife of Obadiah Coollidge defired an order from the Select- men to receive her household goods wch were lodged ₺ order of ye Selectmen at the House of her Mother Rachel Goddards in order to remove with her Hufband to Malborough, there being

Some probable profpeck of their Living together there and gain- ing a Comfortable Maintenance under this View the Selectmen are Inclined Sd goods be delivered, and Acording order the Clerk to write an Order directed to Mrs Rachal Goddard & Ebenez" Goddard to deliver to Obadiah Coollidge and his wife their houfhold Goods which by ord' of ye Selectmen were put under their Care. which was done as follow's.
Watertown Sept 30th 1728.
To Mrs Rachal Goddard and Ebenezer Goddard, whereas the Selectmen of Sd Town by their Ord' of April 3ª 1727 ordred ye re- moval of Obadiah Coolledge Wife and Houfhold Goods to Your houfe to continue there under your care till further order of ye Selectmen. Sª Obadiah Coollidges Wife defireing of ye Selectmen that she may receive her goods again in order to remove wth her Hufband to Malborough, their being a profpeck of their gaining a Comfortable Maintenance there. under this view the Select- men are Inclined that ye sd Obadiah Coolledge & Wife Should have their goods again. And Accordingly you the Sd Rachal & Ebenezer Goddard are hereby ordred to deliver ye sd Obadiah Coolledge & Wife their houfhold Goods (which were lodged in your houfe by order of ye Selectmen as aforesd) when they Se caufe to call for them in ord' for removall.

At Sª Meeting the Selectmen ordred the Clerk to write a War- rant directed to Joseph Harrington Conftable of Sd Town To warn one Mary Holland (a young woman) to depart out sª Town who came Laft from the Town of Framingham Sometime (by Informa- tion) in the month of Sept or Octb'. Laft paft who refides at the dwelling houfe of John Stouels in Sd Town ye Selectmen Refufing to Accept of her to be an Inhabitant of Sd Town.
Which was done as followeth.
Middx fs, To M' Joseph Harrington Conftable of Watertown in Sd County Greeting. The Selectmen of sd Town being Informed yt there is one Mary Holland alias Mary Holley a young woman come to Dwell in Watertown who came Laft from ye Town of Framingham in sd County (by information) some time in Sept or Octob' Laft Paft and Now refides at the Dwelling houfe of of M' John Stouells in sd Watertown her Circumftances are Such that the Selectmen Refuse to Accept of her to be an Inhabitant of Watertown.
These are therefore in his Majes: Name to Will and Require You the Sd Joseph Harrington forthwith to Warn the Sd Mary Holland to Depart forthwith out of Watertown and No Longer to abide therein the Selectmen refufing to Accept of her to be an Inhabitant of Sd Town, And Make return of this Warrant and Your doings thereon forthwith to one one of ye Selectmen or Town

At Sd Meeting the Selectmen ordred the Clerk to Write a Warrant Directed to Joseph Harrington Conftable of Sd Town to Warn all the Freeholders and other Inhabitants of Watertown (the other Conftable being ill) who are Quallifyed to Vote in Town Affairs to Meet at the Publick Meeting houfe in the Eafterly Precinct in Sd Town on Monday the 23 day of December Currant at 10 ye Clock in the fore None for the Ends Set forth in the Warrant which is as followeth.

Thefe are to Will and Require You forthwith to Warn all the Freeholders and other Inhabitants of Watertown who are Qualli- fyed According to Law to Vote in Town Affairs To Meet at the Publick Meeting houfe in the Eafterly Precinct in Sd Town on Monday the 23ª day of Decemb' Currant at Ten of ye Clock in the forenoon of sd Day for the Ends following viz' :
I. To hear the Town Treafurers Acct.
2. To grant a Town Rate or Afsefsment for to pay Town Creditors their dues, the Support of ye Grammer and Englifh School in ye Town, the Support of the Poor &c.
3. To grant the Sum of Ninety two pounds Eight Shillings to pay the fourth Payment of the Loan Publick Bills of Credit and to be added to the Town Rate abovesd or Afsefsed by it Self as the Town Shall Say.

4. To know the Mind of the Town where the places for the Two School houfes (formerly voted by the Town to be in each Precinct) shall be; and whether the Town will grant a Sutable Some of money (to be added to the Town Rate abovesd) in order for the erecting sd School houfes.
