All the grants of money and allowances made this meeting were old Tenner.


Then the Selectmen Laid before the Town the following Way's Laid out by them for the ufe of ye Town. vizt.


A Town Way Laid out Leading by M' John Sawins as Difcribed in their Report, which the Town Accepted of and Voted to be recorded for a Town way.


Another Report of a Way Laid out over Kings Common as Difcribed & Stated in the Report which the Town Accepted. And Voted the Report to be recorded and the Way therein to be for the Towns ufe.


Two other Way's Leadind out of ye Publick high way up to the Meeting houfe which the Town did not Allow Nor Accep off.


Then the Alteration of the Town Way Continued to this Meet- ing & referred to in the warning of this Meeting was Laid before the Town. A Petition was put in Signed by Many hands object- ing Againft the Alteration.


The Vote was put whether it is the Mind of the Town to alter sª Town way as Difcribed in the sd Warrant and ye Vote paft in ye Negative.


The Petition of Jofiah Perry & Sam1: Barnard was Red to the Town and after debat the Vote was put whether it is the Mind of the Town to Grant the prayer of Sd Petition and the Vote paft in the Negative.


The Petition of Israel Mead was Red to the Town praying that the bounds of ye Land Granted to him by the Town Might Extend further towards ye River as Set forth in his Petition and that he might hang a Gate

The Petition of Jona" Church was Red to the Town praying That the Town wld give to him the half Acre of Land that his Wind mill Stands upon. In Anfwer to Sd Petition,


The Town Voted and Granted & gave to the sd Church the half Acre of Land prayed for on wch his Sd Mill Stands to him his heirs & Afsigns for ever.


The Petition of Stephen Sawin was Red to the Town, praying yt ye Town would pleafe to Continue ye priviledge of Setting up gates or Barrs aCrofs the Town Ways which the Town granted him Laft May.


In Anfwer to Sd Petition the Town Voted and Granted the Con- tinuance of Sª priviledge prayed for During the Town Pleafure.


The Vote was put Whether it is the Mind of the Town That thofe Surveyers of High Ways who were Collectors who have not work't out all their Rates have Liberty and are hereby Impowred to work out and Compleat their Rates in this prefent Year. So as to make up with the Selectmen Agreeable to y' Warrants. And ye Vote paft in the Affirmative.


May 3. 1743. A Town Way Laid out by the Selectmen for ye ufe of Watertown. Begining at the Publick Road wch Leads by the burying place Runing Northward from Sd Road Between the Land of John Sawin and the Training field, The Sd Way at the Northeaft Corner of the Training field as now projected is three Rods wyde (The Training field Eaft Line is Nine Rods in length) and from Sd Corner of the Train ing field to Run Straight to a Stake at the End of Twenty Rods Againft M' Sawins Moft Wefterly Bow of his Wall fence and there the Way is Two Rod and a half Wyde. And from that Stake to Run A Straight Line till it Enterfex Nath1 Coollidges Wall fence And the Way where it Enterfex Said Coollidges Wall

A Way Laid out by ye Selectmen of Watertown for the ufe of Said Town, Acrofs part of the Land Called Kings Common, Sd Way Begins at the Town Way wch Leads by Ebener Chenrys. Turning out of the Sd Way at the Southeaft Corner of Sª Chenrys Land The Eaft Line of Said Way begining at a heap of Stones Lying Two Rods & a half North from Sam1 Prentices Wall, and about Twenty Six Rods Weft from the Southweft Corner of M' Smiths Land (called Perry Corner) And So Runig from Sd heap of Stones on a Straight Line Northerly Twenty Rods to a heap of Stones Lying Two Rods Eaft from Ebenez Chenry Corner this line to be the Eaft bounds of Sd Way So far and Sª Chenrys fence as it Now Stands to be the Weft Bounds the Way at it's firft Enterance being abot Eight Rods Wyde. then Runing from the Laft mentioned Heap of Stones on a Straight Line Northwardly about Twenty Six Rods where it Enterfix the Wall fence againft M' Smiths Land (Called the Common Orchard) the Way to be two Rods Wide from Sd Line Weftward, Then M' Smiths Wall to be ye Eaft Bounds for Rods the Sd Way to be two Rods Wyde from Sd Wall. Then Sd Way to turn from Sd Wall and to Run Wefterly And Runing from a great Stone (wch is the Corner Bounds) on a Straight Line to the Northeaft Corner of Eben" Chenrys Land, the Way to be two Rods Wyde North from Sd Line then M' Chenrys Northerly Wall fence as it now Stands to be the Bounds of Sd Way So far as his North fence Runs and the Way to be two Rods Wyde North from Sd fence, then the Line Still Extending Wefterly parrellel with Sd Chenry Northerly fence till it Interfex the Town Way Latly Laid out, the Way Still Con- tinuing Two Rods in Wydth.

At the Meting abovesd Agreed wth M' Nath1. Harrington to keep and Supply the Grammer and English School in the Town for the Space of one year from the firft of this Inftant for the Sum of Ninty Pounds old Tenner.


It being Appointed at this Meeting to put out the Wid". Webb to Board who has been at the Towns Charge. And Several Per- fons Appearing who were So generous as to offer to keep the Sd Widw. A month a piece without charging the Town any thing there for, the Selectmen Agree that thofe Prfons Should take her, at their Offer. the perfons thus offering were M' Jonas Bond M' Sam1 Jenifon M' Isaac Sanderfon.


At Sd Meeting ye Selectmen Agreed to Divide the Sd Town between the Two Surveyers of High Ways. Agreable to the Divifion between the two Conftables for Collecting Town Afsefmts.


And the Selectmen Appointed to David Coollidge Survey' &c. The Eafterly Diftrict to be his District for Collecting and Mending the Publick Ways & Town Ways therein, Sd Diftrict Contains in it the Town Way wch Runs from the Publick Road by M' Ebenez' Goddards and by the Meeting houfe and So acrofs the Town to the North Bounds Near Thos Wellingtons. And the Selectmen Appointed to Will™ Coollidge Survey' &c The Wefterly Diftrict to be his Diftrict for Collecting and Mending the Publick Ways and Town Ways therein. Said Wefterly Diftrict Contains all the Publick Ways and Town Ways which are on the Wefterly Side of the abovesd Crofs Way Crofs the Town. [281]


At a Meeting of ye Selectmen at M' Jonas Bonds on the 1 1th of March 1743. Nathanail Norcrofs gave Bond to ye Town Treafurer for what he was to give for the Island Confirmed to him by ye Town at their Meeting on the 9th of May Laft.


At Said Meeting Agreed that whereas the Surveyer of the High Way's in the Month of Jany Laft by ord' of ye Selectmen Drew off a Confiderable Quantity of Timber that Incumbred the High Ways and Secured the Same, and as the Law Makes provifion that the Charge of Clearing Ways y' are Incumbred SId be paid out of ye Metarells, that the Surveyer that cleared ye Sd Ways Set up publick Notifications by Ord' of ye Selectmen, That if the owners of the Sd Timber will come and pay the Surveyer his Charge of Moving Sd Timber from off ye Sd Way's before the 27th of March Currant Well. otherwise on Sd Day So much of ye sd Timber will be Expofed to Sale to the higheft bidder to pay and Satiffy Sª Cost and Charge.


The Town having paft a Vote that the Selectmen take care and Imform Againft Such Perfons that Lay down Timber So as to Incumber the publick Way's that they may be prefented. Accord- ing to Sd truft Agre'd by the Selectmen that they will take Advice and Inform Againft all Such Perfons as have Laid Timber to the Incumbering the Sd publick Ways that proof can be made out againft. M' Joseph Harrington one of ye Selectmen was Defired to go and take Advice & that ye Selectmen will procicute Sd Affair.


Att a Meeting of ye Selectmen (at D. Coollidges) On the 23ª of Apr 1744


It being the Year for Prambulation & Renewing the Markes on the Lines between the Adjacent Towns. At Sd Meeting the Selectmen Did Appoint Mefsrs. Jona". Brown and Jona™ Bemis to Preambuate and Renew the Lines between Watertown and the Adjacent Towns. And they are Appointed to Meet with Such Perfons as the Selectmen of Cambridge Shall Appoint, at the Line between Watertown & Cambridge Near Edwd Marrits on Munday ye Laft day of April Currant at Nine of ye Clock beforenoon, And with Such Perfons as ye Selectmen of Waltham Shall Appoint at one of ye Clock afternoon of Sd Day at ye Line between Waltham & Watertown Near Thos. Wellingtons. And wth Such Perfons as the Selectmen of Newton May Appoint at four clock the Same Day on the Line between Watertown & Newton Near Dan' Cooks. And to make Return of y' Doings on Sd Affair.

We the Subfcribrs. being Appointed by ye Selectmen of Sd Town To Preambulate on the Lines between Sd Watertown and the Adjacent towns and to Renew the Marks, have Meet wth the Perfons Appointed by ye Selectmen of ye Adjacent Towns and with them have Renewed the Marks on the Lines aforesd.

They on the 11th. of May 1744 Meet at M' Joseph Childs in ord' to View the Towns Stock of Powder &c (it being at Sd Childs) And After Viewing & Weighing they find that y' was of Powder with the Cask 92 lb. of Led wth Cafks 206 1b 34 and of flints 709.


Agre'd to procure as Soon as may be what more Ammunition is wanting to make good a Town Stock Agreable to Law.


And that the Treafure Se wt Debts can be got in forth with to procure the Same.


At a Meeting of the Selectmen a Jos: Masons Esq'. on the Ninth of May 1744. The Selectmen having Rec'd a Precipt from Authority Requiring them in his Majes. Name forthwith to Caufe the Freeholdrs. &c of Watertown to Afsemble &c. To Elect & Depute One or more Perfons to Reprefent them at a Great and General Court or Afsembly Appointed to be Convened at Boston on the 30th Day of May Currant.


In Obfervance whereof the Selectmen ordred the Clerk to Isue out Warrants Directed to ye Conftables of Watertown To Warn the Freehold's and other Inhabts of Watertown who are Quallifyed According to his Majestys Charter to Vote in the Choice of a Reprefentative to Afsemble and Meet at the Publick Meeting houfe in Sd Town on Munday the Twenty firft Day of May Currant at two of the clock after noon. Then and there to Elect and Deput one Meet perfon to Serve for and Reprefent them at A great and General Court or Afsembly Appointed to be Convened held and kept for his Majestys Service at the Court houfe in Boston upon Wedenfday the Thirtyeth day of May Currant.

To hear the Report of their Comtee Appointed to Agree with Perfons what they Should give for Lands Lying to the Ways againft the front of y" Lands. What they have further done in Sª Affair. And the Town to Act y' pleafure wth Relation to Sd Report.


To know the Mind of ye Town whether they will Appoint And Impower their Reprefentative to joine with Such Prfons as may be Appointed by Wefton & Waltham to Petition the great & General Court in behalf of Watertown Wefton & Waltham for a Grant of Some of the unapropreated Lands belonging to ye Province to be made to ye sd Towns to help them to Defray the great Charge which they are at Annually in Maintaing the great Bridge over Charles River in Sª Watertown.


To know the Mind of ye Town whether they will Choofe 2 Committee to take the Care of ye Repairing of ye Minifteral Houfe.

Voted and Chofe M' Jonas Bond to Reprefent the Town of Watertown at a Great and Gen1. Court or Afsembly Appointed to be held and kept for his Majestys Service at the Court houfe in Boston on the Thirtyeth Day of May Currant.

That the Town Grant the prayer of ye Petition So far that the Petitioner M' Israel Mead Extend his Southerly Bounds So far further Southward to ward the River So as to begin at Sam1 Jenifons South wefterly Corner of his fence Next the River, and to run Straight from Sd Corner to a Saven bush which is the firft bush, Standing about the top of high water Mark and from Sd bush to Run a long under the Bank just on the Lower Side of the Savin bufhis till it comes to the Town Way Leading up from the River a great Stone Lying in the Line not far off of Sd Way, wch. Line or Bounds we judge will be generaly about high water Mark, he the Sd Mead fulfilling the Conditions on wch the Land was granted and Confirmed to him.

The following is the Comtee Report firft Acted on.


We the Subfcribers the Comtee. to agree wth Perfons wt they SI give for Land Lying to the ways againft the front of y' Lands &c. have Agre'd with Jofhua Stratton he move out his front fence againft his Land and the front fence againft the Widows Third So as to Inclofe about Three forths of An Acrer of Land being four Rods wide at the weft End and Seven paces wide at the Eaft End the High way all along to be left full four Rods Wide from the South Bounds, He the Sd Jofhua paying into the Town Treafurey for Sd three Quarters of An Acre the Sum of Eleven pounds five Shillings old Tenner for the ufe of ye Town when the Town Shall grant and Confirm Sd Land to him (the Wid" not to be Deprived of her Reafonable priviledge)


Agre'd wth M' John Hastings alfo That he Move out his front fence Seven paces at the Weft End and five paces at the Eaft End So as to Inclofe ab forty Rods of Land, the front Line againft the High Way to be a Straight Line, and the High Way Left full four Rods in Wydth. He ye sd Hastings paying for Sd forty Rods of Land in to the Town Treafurey for ye ufe of ye Town the Sum of fifty Shillings old Tenner when the Town Confirms ye sd Land to him.
